After almost four months of trying Layla fell pregnant again. Her and Jeff were overjoyed, but in the back of her mind there was always that little bit of worry.
At their twelve week scan everything was looking perfect. Their baby was nice and healthy, and that helped to set their minds at ease a little.
When Layla was around twenty weeks she fainted while out on the farm with Jeff. It was a scary moment for the both of them, but after getting her checked over they found her blood pressure had dropped suddenly, but shortly after she was absolutely fine. She had gone through the very same thing with Benji, it was just one of those strange unexplained things.
By the time her due date neared, Benji had turned six and was in his second year at school. He had been making amazing progress and they were so proud of him. His best friend James from kindergarten ended up attending the same school and Layla was so thrilled that they got to be together again.
A week out from her due date Layla woke with pains during the night, they weren't unbearable so she didn't worry too much.
"Jeff... babe?" She said as she shook him awake.
"Yeah Sweetheart. Everything okay?" He asked groggily.
"I think I'm going into labour"
"Really?"
"Yup" she grinned.
"Do you want to go to the hospital?"
"I think I'm okay at the moment. I might just message Angie so she is on standby though" she laughed.
"How bad does it hurt?" He asked as she breathed through a contraction.
"Only maybe a 3 or 4 at this stage".
"Okay that's good. Do you need anything?"
"I could really smash back a sandwich" she giggled.
"PB&J?" He asked.
"Course" she smiled. In the early days of her pregnancy when she was having really bad morning sickness, PB&J sandwiches were the only thing she could stomach.
Layla messaged Angie and told her what was happening. They had organised months ago that Angie would look after Benji while she was in labour if needed.
After her sandwich and a glass of water Layla went back to bed with Jeff and tried to get some rest. Who knew how long this labour would go on for, with Benji it was fourteen hours, she wanted to be prepared for when things progressed.
She managed to get a little sleep overnight and when she woke in the morning she was still having contractions. Her and Jeff got Benji ready and took him to school. Shortly after they returned to the farm Layla's contractions had gone from a 5 on the pain scale to around an 8 and she felt like they needed to head to the hospital. Jeff put her bag in the car while Layla went to the bathroom, as she pulled down her pants she felt a warm trickle down her legs. She couldn't see over her huge belly so she yelled out to Jeff.
"Yeah Sweetheart?" He said from the oher side of the door.
"I need you in here" she said.
"Everything okay?" He asked as he came in.
"I don’t know I can't see. I feel something trickling can you check?" She said worriedly.
She saw the fear flash across his face as he remembered the last time he had to do this for her. Pushing that fear aside he checked his wife to find a clear liquid dripping down her thighs.
"I think your waters have broken Sweetheart" he said.
"That's good... I guess" she said as another contraction hit. This one was much stronger than the last few and seemed to go on forever. She held Jeff tight as she breathed through it.
"We should get to the hospital" he said as the contraction slowed.
"Definitely"
As Jeff helped her they began to move out of the bathroom until another contraction hit. Layla cried out in pain, struggling to remember to breathe through it.
"Breathe Sweetheart, that's it, you got it" Jeff encouraged.
Once she had gotten past the contraction they moved through the house before another one ravaged her body.
"Jeff... they are coming too fast. I-" she began before having to stop to breathe through the pain. "I don't think I can make it to the hospital. I feel the need to push already" she finished as the contraction calmed down.
"Are you sure?"
"I dunno. I'm kinda scared. I don’t want to have this baby in the car".
"I'll call the midwife" Jeff said as he dialed the number. She picked up almost immediately. Jeff explained what was happening and Mary, the midwife talked him though checking how dilated she was.
Putting the phone on speaker Jeff helped Layla lay down on the couch and removed her pants. "I'll can see the head... I think she's fully dilated" Jeff spoke to the phone.
"Layla, do you feel a strong urge to push with each contraction?" Mary asked.
"Yes" Layla groaned as she tried to breathe through another one.
"Okay it's time. I'm on my way but I'm about fifteen minutes out" Mary said. "Jeffrey I need you to take charge. Stay on the phone and I will talk you through everything. You'll need some clean towels or sheets and something soft to wrap the baby in" she said.
"Okay" Jeff replied a little nervously as he rushed to grab what he needed and made it back to Layla.
"You got this Daddy" Layla smiled lovingly at him.
"Layla, if you can squat down, or bend over a chair or something to let gravity help then do that. If not then laying down is fine. Make sure there are clean towels or sheets underneath you. With the next contraction I want you to push as hard as you can okay" Mary told her. "Jeffrey, once the head is out I need you to tell Layla to stop pushing" she instructed. "Cradle the babies head carefully and with the next contraction Layla can push again until the babies shoulders are through and the rest of the body will follow" she continued.
"Okay, we can do this can't we Sweetheart" Jeff grinned.
"Absolutely" she smiled as she gave his hand a squeeze.
It's finally time!! Stay tuned for the next chapter guys!
