"Jeffrey, once the baby is out you will need to check that the cord isn't wrapped around its neck. Then gently wipe over the babies airways to make sure they are clear. Check that the baby is breathing, and if not either gently tap the babies bottom or softly blow in the babies face to encourage it to breathe" Mary told him.
"Okay Mary, I got it" Jeff replied.
Layla cried out as another contraction hit. "Okay Sweetheart, push! Push as hard as you can Layla" Jeff encouraged.
She clenched her teeth tightly and gripped the edge of the sofa. As she squatted down in front of her husband she pushed with all she had, holding in a scream that desperately wanted to tear itself from her lungs. "Okay stop! Great job Layla. The head is out" he said as he cradled it gently in his large hands. "Take a breath Babe, you're doing fantastic".
"With the next contraction, push again Layla" Mary instructed through the phone.
The contraction hit and Layla pushed with every ounce of strength in her body, but the shoulders didn't come out. She took deep breaths as the contraction slowed.
"The shoulders aren't out" Jeff relayed to Mary.
"Push again on the next contraction" she replied.
Another contraction tore through her body and Layla pushed, the babies shoulders coming through as she bared down and pushed as hard as she could. Just as Mary had said the rest of the baby slid out and Jeff was there ready to catch it. Layla lay down on the towels as she caught her breath. "Great job Layla Sweetheart. I'm so proud of you" he grinned as he looked down at the baby in his arms. He checked the cord and everything was fine, carefully he wiped at the babies nose and mouth to make sure it was clear, listening for its breathing.
"Mary, the baby is out, the cord is clear and so are the airways but I can't tell if it's breathing or not".
"Blow gently in the babies face" she reminded him.
Carefully he blew air in the little bundles face and suddenly the baby took a sharp intake of air before letting out a little wail. Jeff grinned proudly at the baby as it cried in his hands. Grabbing up a soft baby blanket he carefully handed the baby to Layla so she could hold it against her now naked chest before draping the blanket over to keep it warm.
"Baby is here safe and sound" he told Mary through the phone.
"Great job you guys! Encourage baby to breastfeed, it will help with the contractions and birthing of the placenta. I'm only minutes away. I will see you very soon" Mary said.
"Thank you Mary" they both said and Jeff ended the call.
"Look at this perfect little angel" Jeff cooed as he sat behind Layla, holding the both of them in his arms. Carefully Layla lifted the baby up to her nipple. She had managed to breastfeed Benji for the first year of his life, so this wasn't too foreign for her, although it had been a while. After a few attempts she managed to get the baby to latch on and start feeding.
"I am so fucking proud right now" Jeff gushed with tears in his eyes.
"We have a perfect healthy little baby" Layla smiled as tears spilled down her face. "Is it a boy or girl?"
"In all the excitement, I didn't even look" Jeff chuckled. Peeling back the blanket he took a peek at the baby. "Its a girl! We have a daughter!" he exclaimed excitedly.
"We have a perfect baby girl" Layla grinned as she kissed Jeff. "I thought for sure I was carrying another boy" she laughed.
Mary arrived and helped to birth the placenta and cut the umbilical cord. "You guys are amazing" Mary smiled. "Look at this perfect little bundle of joy. What are you going to call her?"
"Are you still happy with the name we chose months ago?" Layla asked Jeff.
"I think it's perfect. It fits her" Jeff grinned as he stroked his baby girls cheek while she fed from her Mumma.
"Her name is Mila" Layla smiled. "Mila Grace Morgan".
"That's beautiful" Mary smiled.
Once Mila had finished feeding, Mary performed all the checks and tests needed for a newborn baby. She weighed a healthy 8lb 4oz and was perfect in every way. She helped Jeffrey to put a nappy on the wee baby and get her dressed while Layla had a shower and cleaned up.
When everything had settled down Mary left them to it, and told them she'd be back the next day to check on them.
Mila had a full belly and was very content. She'd fallen asleep in her Daddy's arms and the sight had fresh tears welling up in Layla's eyes.
"How are you feeling Sweetheart?" He asked.
"Sore, and tired. But so happy" Layla smiled as she looked at their daughter.
"I'll make you something to eat and then you can have a nap okay" Jeff smiled as he passed her Mila.
"Isn't your Daddy just the best" Layla cooed.
Layla settled baby Mila in her bassinet next to their bed before eating some lunch and curling up beneath the blankets for a nap.
"I am in absolute awe of you Sweetheart" Jeffrey whispered as he kissed her forehead. "You birthed our baby on the living room floor with no pain relief. You're fucking incredible".
"I couldn't have done it without you Babe. You were amazing. You delivered her safely and I couldn't be more in love with you right now" Layla gushed.
"Get some rest Beautiful. I will pick Benji up when school finishes" he said as he blew her a kiss from the doorway.
"I can't wait to see what he thinks of his baby sister" Layla grinned.
"He's gonna love her to bits. That little farmer princess will have us all wrapped around her little finger" Jeff smiled.
