Roman POV

I adjusted dad's tools for what seemed like the hundredth time in the last hour. Dad has been gone for a out an hour now. He was outside making us some lunch while I finished setting up camp earlier today. Adrenaline ran through my blood when he said he saw something fly overhead. An Avian! But, I quickly put that thought on the back burner thinking I shouldn't get my hopes up.

I begged to go with him, but he denied my request saying I needed to stay here, for 'safety precautions.' Grabbing a few objects, dad walked away leaving me alone and disappointed at our small camp. In that time I rearranged his weapons and other tools.

A loud screech rang through the area we were in making me jump. What was that!? Wanting to find out what was going on, I ran in that direction. I knew dad was going to be furious over the fact I left. My heart began to beat harder and faster the farther I got to the area. As I got closer I was able to identify the voice as my dad's when it rang out again. When I finally caught up with everything, I saw two black, fading into purple wings tucked over a limp body, still breathing of course. Sad thing was I couldn't see the face. I was always told Avians were beautiful creatures, and I wanted to see for myself. But until we got to camp I would have to focus on the wings. They were gorgeous. The wings looked so soft and silky smooth. I almost reached out to touch them but I held back.

"Dad?" I finally said, breaking the silence.

My father spun around at my voice, "We got one, boy!" He smiled through one of his muscular arms into the air, "Now, lets get back to camp!"

"W-what? You're not mad I left camp!?" I questioned trying to understand my father.

"Why would I? We are filthy rich right here!"

"Huh?"

"Look at the wings son. See how they fade from black to purple? These kinds of feather combinations are extremely rare, and can make some poor hunter very happy!"

"You get money from their wings!? How come you've never sold anything else?"

"They weren't worth anything."

"So you killed the Avians for fun!?" I shouted.

"Yep." I looked at my father, horrified. "Oh come on son, I'm not the only person that hunts and kills the things for fun!" I shook my head. "Pretty soon you will be taking up this as well!"

"W-what about Dominic o-or Jake? Can't they do it!?" I stuttered.

"Don't you dare bring your brothers into this!" Dad snapped getting ready to slap me. I instantly regreted my choice of words. Today was the day of my death. Goodbye Wo-

"D-don't hurt him-m," a weak, but still audible voice commanded.

Both me and my dad turned to see the once limp Avian begin to move. "Stay out of this ya little shit!" my dad shouted kicking the winged person in the gut, sending the poor thing into a nearby tree.

My eyes widened. I saw the soft, pale face and dark purple hair that I grew to love. I wanted to speak but, no words could express what I was feeling. My heart shattered looking at him. He had dried blood coming from his mouth along with a cut on cheek that was bleeding. One of his legs was bent at an awkward angle. It made me sick. I felt like I was going to puke. Not from seeing him as an Avian but, his condition. I couldn't bare the sight of him broken and beaten like this. Virgil I'm so sorry....

Turning away, I heard a small whimper escape the winged boy I had a crush on and it only made my heart break more. "Come on you little shit," I heard my dad say and a shuffling sound was heard, followed by a whimper. "Roman!"

I left my little trance and followed my dad not wanting to look at him or Virgil. My mind was racing processing everything that just happened. I didn't say a word all the way back to camp.

"Son go get my blue bag." my father said bluntly. I jumped from my seat from the sudden command.

I grabbed the rather heavy bag from the back corner of the truck. "What are you going to do?" I asked walking towards him.

"Teach this little shit a lesson," my dad growled. I was used to seeing him mad but the red glint in his eyes could give me nightmares for weeks. I shuttered as I caught a glimpse of Virgil. He was huddled up against the tree he was chained to. A terrified look came as my dad walked closer. You could see the pleading look in his eyes to make him stop.

"W-wait!" I suddenly said, not thinking of anything to say. Dad glared daggers at me, urging me to continue, "T-the plan is to sell him right? For money?" My father continued to stare, "Well, if I was a buyer I wouldn't want my product to be damaged, would I?"

Dad thought for a moment, "Good call boy!" He placed the bag down and walked over to me. He ruffled my red hair and then made some dinner.

I laid there in my sleeping back, tossing and turning, unable to find sleep. I couldn't get the terrified look on Virgil's face out of my mind. I stayed in my bag for a few moments before I sat up and quietly crawled out of the tent I was in, careful not to wake my dad.

I spotted the boy of my dreams laying next to the tree, shivering. It was really could at this time of night so I couldn't blame him. I cautiously walked to him. Despite my efforts to be quiet, a twig from underneath snapped. Virgil shot up, his eyes wide and alert.

"It's just me," I whispered. He seemed to calm down releasing I couldn't cause him any true harm. Virgil was stunning under the moonlight's glow. "Um, it is so good to your okay."

I got no response. "Look Virgil I-"

Before I could continue I felt soft lips on mine. OH MY GOD VIRGIL IS KISSING ME. Even though it ended all too soon I wanted more.

"I-I'm sosososososososososo sorry!" Virgil squeaked backing up from me. A deep red blush washed over him, and all I did was smile. "I-I wasn't-I mean-I um shit, um-"

I cut him off with a more passionate kiss than before. He melted in and his fingers found his way into my hair.

We both pulled away needing air. "You have NO idea how long I've wanted to do that," I whispered putting my forehead on his.

"Me too," Virgil nuzzled his face into my neck. I smiled this was amazing.

"Let's go."

"What?"

I stood up and offered my hand to him. "I'm getting you out of here."

"I can't w-walk," he whispered. Right his leg is broken. I walk over to the utility table that I had arrange so many times, and grabbed a key. I unlocked Virgil's chains and picked him up gently.

"You good?"

"Y-yeah," Virgil said. His arms wrapped around my neck and I felt the tips of his wings brush against my legs as I walked.

"I'll protect you, I promise my love."
