Reed held onto me a little tighter as they continued to shout. People from both packs started screaming and howling at both me and Reed pointing accusing fingers, shouting the most creative and effectively hurtful curses I had ever heard, and scaring the pants off of me. Never, in my entire life, had I ever been subject to that much hate and criticism all at once. It made me dizzy, wrapping an arm around Reed and squeezing a little bit helped me keep my balance against the huge waves of anger and betrayal almost. It was almost funny how one second, they hated me for being human and being the Alpha's daughter and that they would either have to obey me or get bitch slapped by my dad, and then the other they were shouting about the outrage of a Night Walker Alpha being my mate. Like he wasn't good enough for me. I wasn't sure if it was a compliment to me, because I was so awesome I should have way higher standards, or that I was low and he was unbelievably low and even I had to have some self respect. I decided to go with the first one.
Reed growled into the microphone fiercely, his eyes glowing. My heart was pounding in my chest. Eyes were glowing, claws and fangs were coming out. It was literally a pack of wolves surrounding me about to attack, and my only hope of survival would be hiding behind Reed and Melanie hoping to god that they wouldn't lose. Maybe Darren, but he was still a little sore from before.
"She's my mate, we're going to the same school, our packs are joining one way or another. Deal with it."
Reed pushed the microphone away from his face, straightened up, and stalked out of the gym dragging me behind him. I looked helplessly back at all the angry faces, then back at Melanie who was trying to catch up without drawing too much attention to herself. Behind her, I could see that girl from before getting up and bounding her way down the bleachers to the floor and following after us. Following close behind her was the rest of the posse that had surrounded Reed before school.
I didn't like her.
Reed didn't slow down, leaving me to practically run after him and his long legs. We were almost halfway across campus when I finally gasped out for him to slow down and let me catch my breath. Melanie had been easily keeping pace, along with the other werewolves, while I tried to keep a cool exterior but inside I was dying. It was early, I was a little sore from the extra training, and my legs just weren't that long. He looked around and lead me to a lunch table. We all sat down. Reed on the edge, me to his right, Melanie to my right, and the rest of Reed's friends filled in the space. The girl sat right across from Reed, putting her hands awfully close to the hand he let rest on the table that wasn't around my shoulders.
It sent a tingling sensation throughout my whole body making my stomach tighten. My heart fluttered as he pulled me a little closer against him. My mind raced with all sorts of thoughts like, do I smell, am I sweaty, that girl is way prettier than me, why is everyone taller than me. Things like that. The girl shifted in her spot as she debated whether or not she would speak. Reed wasn't paying attention, he was just absently looking around. She wrestled with it for a second, as if trying to decide how much trouble she would be in if she said it.
"Reed?" she said quietly.
Reed looked at her, "What?"
She swallowed and glanced at me before looking back at Reed, "She's really your mate?"
She was putting it really delicately. Her voice was going up in pitch and she was avoiding eye contact with Reed just in case he decided he wanted to throw her across the cafeteria.
"Yes."
She looked at him and then back down at the table. She rubbed her hands together and thought about what she was going to say again. She wrestled with how to word it correctly so she could maybe keep her life, or maybe her hand. Melanie told me that the Nightwalker Pack was just now starting to get out of the habit of cutting off hands when someone did something too bad. Like disrespect an Alpha or his kid. But you know the saying, old habits die hard.
