THREE YEARS LATER
"Red...Red!...RED!!!"
My eyes flew open and I shot up in bed frantically looking around. To my right I saw Emily. Her hair was now past her shoulders. It was chocolate brown and her eyes had darkened a little since she was born. They were now a dark brown but they looked darker since my curtains were drawn and it was six in the morning.
"What, Em?"I asked rubbing my eyes. Summer vacation and she can't let me sleep in for one day.
"Can you turn on the TV for me Red?"she asked sweetly looking up at me with her big eyes.
She was so short. She was barely three feet tall. This made me feel really tall whenever I was near her or any of her stuff. My bed is a twin bed but when Emily sits on it, it looks like a king size. It's gonna suck when she ends up being taller than me. And more beautiful. She looks a lot like my dad. Small nose, big brown eyes, tan skin, wide smile. She was starting to get better at talking too. Her first words were last year. Em's birthday is in a couple of days. She's getting to the age when she knows and has mastered all the basic commands: "mine", "no" that's a big one, "TV", "hungry", "not fair!", and "why?". That one's a killer. Whenever I try to explain something she just keeps asking me why. Then five minutes later she asks me the same exact question and she keeps asking me why. After a while she either gets bored, I yell "Because!"and sit her in front of the TV, or falls asleep.
Rubbing my eyes and looking at her I sighed and got up. Emily smiled and she started heading down the hall. I stumbled after her terrified for a second that she was going to trip and fall down the stairs but then I realized the safety gate was still on the top. It was funny how she couldn't figure out how to work the latch. I opened the gate and bent down so she could jump on my back. She weighed almost nothing. When we got downstairs I swung her around and set her down gently with her giggling.
"What would you like for breakfast, kiddo?"I asked looking in the pantry.
She popped her head around the pantry door and looked in. She pointed to a box of Cheerios.
I turned on the TV and made our breakfast. The clock above the oven said it was 6:12AM. Restraining myself from groaning I ate my cereal and watched as Emily sat hypnotized by The Little Einsteins. Watching the little kid shows with Emily was always fun. She would laugh at the show and I would chuckle at how funny she thought it was.
For the next hour she watched TV until finally Mom and Dad came down. Emily jumped up.
"Mommy! Daddy!"she shrieked.
Mom's face lit up, "Good morning sweetie."she said picking her up and giving her a kiss.
Dad didn't say anything. He just shuffled over to the coffee pot and started to make coffee. Thank god, I thought. I wrapped myself in a blanket and let myself drift off to sleep knowing I could and not get in trouble for leaving Emily "unattended". Finally, I let myself drift off into a peaceful and dreamless sleep.
"Renee."said a voice while pressure was put on my shoulder.
"Hmm?"I mumbled opening my eyes.
I saw my mom standing above me, "Renee, get dressed, we have somewhere to be."
"What time is it?"
"Almost lunchtime."she said gesturing for me to get off the couch.
Groggily, I got up off the couch and made my way upstairs to my room. I threw on some jeans and a blue t-shirt, I threw my hair into a ponytail and brushed my teeth. My hazel eyes stared back at me.
Downstairs my mom and dad were whispering about something important. They both looked very serious. I slowed my steps and tried to go as quietly as I could. My dad looked up and my mom followed his gaze. They both straightened up and looked uncomfortable.
