"So? How was it?" My dad asked as I sat down at his table. He had already ordered for both of us while I was helping Amelia.
"It was good. She gave me her number." I answered. "She wants to take me out to eat."
"Oh? You mean like a date?" He winked at me.
"No Apa. Just food." I rolled my eyes at him. It would be nice to go on a date with someone, though. Ever since Bryan, I have been too scared to go on dates.
"Well, if you say so, but you never know. Maybe you'll start to like her. Plus, it would be best if you had some new friends. She seems pretty normal." He replied.
"She was kind of a bitch, to be honest."
"Well, so was your mom when I met her. She tried to drown me." He laughed awkwardly.
"You guys never talk about how you met. You just said you met while you were finishing."
"It's a long story. Maybe I'll tell you about it later."
The waitress brought over our food, and we ate quickly. We talked about online school and how much it sucks, but I also didn't want to return to actual school. And he talked about how boring his job was, but he liked it cause he was making more money and could finally buy my mom that necklace she had wanted. Mermaids loved jewelry. According to my mom, mermaids were notorious for sinking ships to steal their treasures. That would explain my obsession with gold hoop earrings. I love some big fucking hoops!
"I went to the beach last week and saw many signs about sharks in the water. From what I heard from the locals, shark sightings are uncommon around here, but now thousands are here." I said, sipping on my water.
"In all of Oregon?" He asked, rubbing his chin.
"No, Dad. Just here, at the beaches in Astoria. It was on the news the other day. They showed video footage from above, and there are so many. Nobody is allowed to go in the water."
"Strange." He said, taking a sip of his coffee. He didn't seem surprised when I told him that. Did he know what was going on?
"Apa? Is there something you're not telling me?"
"I don't know what you're talking about. Where would you like to go next? Maybe we can buy your mom some flowers? I know she'll love that." He said, changing the subject. Why was he avoiding the question? But I knew better than to press on. My dad was never going to tell me.
"Fine. Let's go buy Mom some flowers." I sighed, giving up. We paid the waitress and drove to the floral shop.
"Maybe we can stop at the beach as well?" I suggested. "There's a beach access near the floral shop."
"Maybe next time. And didn't you say there were sharks? They might eat you." He laughed, pinching my cheek.
~
We were finally home after stopping at the floral shop. My dad bought my mom a bouquet of lilies. Those were always her favorite ones.
Going out made me feel better. But now that I was home, the reality was starting to hit me. I quit my job because of Tasha. I lost friends because of Tasha. And I lost my mate because of her as well. I took Amelia's phone number out of my pocket. I stared at it for a while, wanting to text her, but I was too scared. I should wait a week. Otherwise, she's going to think I'm creepy. I buried my head in my pillow. I was so exhausted from all of this. Hopefully, we'll move when school is over.
~One week later~
"I'm going out to buy groceries. Text me what you want." I yelled out, putting my shoes on. It has been a week since I quit and a week since we last, saw Mom. I expected her to return by now, but the ocean was so big it could take months.
"Drive safe!" He waved. "And text Amelia!" I rolled my eyes and walked out of the house. I took her phone number out of my pocket, staring at it. My hands were shaky when I typed in her number.
Hi Amelia, it's Nexy. I changed your tire.
I gulped hard when I pressed the send button. My message sounded so stupid. I was shaking like a leaf waiting for her to text back. I got to my dad's truck and got in when I felt my phone notification go off.
It's about damn time you texted. I was starting to get worried!!
Are you busy today? I promised you lunch. She texted. No, I'm free. I can meet you wherever. I replied.
No no! I'll pick you up. Send me your address, and I'll pick you up at 5. And wear something elegant. This is different from your typical restaurant. 😘
I stared at her text, dumbfounded. I don't even care if she took me to McDonalds. There was no need to take me somewhere fancy. I put my head on the steering wheel, realizing I had nothing "elegant." My dresses weren't even elegant, to begin with. They were pretty, yes, but casual.
"Sorry, Dad, but you're gonna have to order takeout!" I checked my wallet and had about $200 left from my last paycheck. It was enough for a decent dress, maybe a $60 dress? I searched for the closest dress shop on the GPS and drove toward it. Feeling nervous about my first date. When I arrived, I parked at the first empty spot I saw.
"Perfect! Front row parking!" I snickered, getting out. "Okay, Nexy. You got three hours. You can do this!"
I looked through racks and racks of discounted dresses, everything here was pricey, and even the dresses on discount were expensive. "Holy fuck, $300? On sale?" I whispered, checking the price of this pretty dress. I kept looking until something finally caught my eye. It was a black strap dress with a beautiful red and pink floral print. "Okay, okay. I like you a lot." I said, holding it up so I could inspect it better. It reminded me a lot of those 1950s swing dresses. I checked the price, and it had been discounted from $170 to $100 to $60. "My lucky day, double discount. It looks like you're going home with me."
I looked for the closest dressing room and tried it on, and it fit perfectly. I got lucky that the last dress was large. Not only did it have pockets, but the straps were adjustable. Since the pregnancy, my breasts had gotten so big along with everything else. I sighed, looking at myself. I went from a size small to an extra large in over a year. But that was when I had Eudora. I lost a lot of weight but stayed at a large size. Mostly because of these big ass fucking titties, my fat rolls, and my fat ass.
I was about to slip the dress off when someone knocked on the door.
"I got you a different size." The muffled voice said. I tilted my head in confusion. Different size? I didn't ask for a different size. Not wanting to be rude to the employee, I opened the door to let them know they got the wrong person. But as soon as I did, I came face to face with the one person I did not want to see.
He stared at me in shock. I could see his eyes going up and down my body until they finally landed on my breasts, which were on the verge of spilling out. I didn't know what to say or do, so I slowly shut the door. Why was he here? I didn't want to see him after what happened at the restaurant. I quickly took the dress off and got changed into my clothes again. I needed to get out here. Now.
