Tessa's P.O.V
This morning, I was woken up by a crashing sound coming from downstairs. I threw myself out of bed and ran out of my room. I found my mom picking up pieces of plate that were chattered on the floor. I looked on the counter and saw three plates full of crepes and a bowl of strawberries. I went to join her in order to make sure she wasn't injured.
"Are you okay mom?" I asked, squatting down to help her gather the pieces.
"Oh honey no, it's okay I got it."
"No it's fine I wanna help."
I went to get a broom and dust pan. When I came back I started cleaning.
"I'm sorry if I woke you. Salem's tail grazed my foot and startled me."
"It's fine, but why are you up so early?" I queried since it was barely 6:30.
"Well... I wanted to eat breakfast with my two wonderful children." she said taking the plates and walking in direction of the dining room. After bringing the other plate and the strawberries, I went back in the kitchen to get the chocolate syrup and the powdered sugar and placed it on the table. My mom was staring at me when I looked at her. She took a few steps towards me and smiled slightly.
"You know Tessa, this past year has been really hard on all of us." she said as she took my hand in hers.
"I know that I've been absent a lot lately. Even though, we don't talk about it I know you guys miss it. I know you miss our breakfasts as a family, full of stupid jokes from your father. Trust me...I miss him too, and I've come to realize how hard it must be for you and Scott to go through this alone. This past year I've made the mistake of believing you guys could handle everything that comes your way. But it's been hard and I know it must have been hard for you too..."
"What's going on here?" we heard a voice ask. I saw Scott standing on top of the stairs, confusion spread across his face. My mom gestured for him to come join us and he came to us. We each took a seat and waited for our mother to talk.
"Okay ummm... look I love you kids so much. And I am so terribly sorry for making you both feel like my career was more important than my family. I have always tried so hard to make sure you guys had everything, but for a while now, I feel like I've failed as a mother..."
"No you didn't mom, it wasn't..."
"Tessa please let me finish." she said while wiping away her tears.
"I have failed you both. I might have been there physically, but I didn't provide that emotional support I was suppose to provide. I feel like I pushed you away without even meaning to. That's why this morning I gave Betty the day off so I can cook for my family. I know we never be the same, but what we can do is help each other heal. I can't promise to always be home, but I can promise to be more involved in your lives."
She took a deep breath and I looked at Scott and he was on the verge of crying. At that moment a smile formed on my face. It's been a while since we had sat together as a family. Thinking about what my mom said I know she's right. After dad's death, it's like the glue that held us together faded away. We lived in this huge house like three roommates that get along fine rather than a family. As I looked at him I saw him smile at my mom who smiled back at him. The silence was interrupted when Scott started speaking.
"Sometimes we think the only way to heal and move on is by not talking about what happened and give each other time. But I think that all we've been doing was let each other drown in their pool of sorrow. A wound will always hurt, but it won't heal properly if we just put a band aid on it and keep going." he took a pause and look at mom.
"Don't beat yourself up mom. We all had a role to play and we all have failed. But now it's time for us to start over...and move on, together."
I was staring at my brother in full adoration. He's not a little boy anymore. He was no longer the kid who would go to sleep with chocolate crumbs all over his face. He's the man my father always wanted him to be and I feel like we can count on him. He began to speak again which brought me back to reality.
"And as the man of the house..."he said imitating my father's tone and posture which made both mom and I chuckle.
"I say we should start eating these crepes before they get colder and I get hungrier." we all laughed and started eating. As we ate we talked about school, mom talked about work and how hard it is to take care of her company and dad's hotels as well. Scott mentioned a girl called Adrienne that he is interested in.
"That's a nice name, how is she like?" mom asked between bits.
"She's very beautiful with the most gorgeous light brown eyes. She's smart and nice...oh and she loves art."
"Seems like we've got a boy in love in this house." I said with a smirk.
"Says the girl who made out with her "friend from school". I almost choked on my strawberry when those words left his mouth.
"Wait, what? Tessa you have a boyfriend?" my mother exclaimed and I shot my brother a glare as he smirked back at me.
It took me fifteen minutes to convince my mom that I didn't have a boyfriend and then she made me promise to not get pregnant anytime soon since she said and I quote "I am way too young and attractive to be a grandmother already".
By the time I finished showering, it was already 7:29. I went into my closet and chose a black long sleeve tank top and, white jeans that I paired with my plain white Adidas. I kept my makeup natural today and wore my hair in a high messy bun. I added a choker and took my bag and my phone before going downstairs. When I got into the kitchen and saw my mom standing by the counter. Scott came down the stairs a few seconds after. I walked up to her and kissed her on her cheek and said goodbye to my brother. I took my car keys before walking out.
I got to school at 7:53. After parking my car I began to walk towards the school entrance. Walking in, I saw Tailah standing in front of our lockers. She saw me coming and smiled before walking towards me.
"Hey" she said before giving me a hug.
"Hey"
"How are you feeling, I'm sorry I should've stayed with you yesterday..."
"Tai, it's okay don't worry. I just wanted to be...alone."
"Yes I understand. You're okay right?" she said flashing me her beautiful smile.
"Yeah, let's go."
