Storytellers

By Jesserocerous

“And that’s how granddad Jayden lost his teeth”

Said my younger sister Naomi, ending her re-enactment of the story that’s just about as crazy as it sounds.

It’s Christmas Eve 2014 and my family and I are sat around the toasty warm fireplace found in our living room, sharing stories and memories. We all laugh at my ten year old sister’s silliness, although we’ve heard this story hundreds of times prior to today, her spontaneous personality and storytelling skills make it impossible to resist the urge to laugh.

Every year, as a family tradition we sit around the fire and remember all the crazy, kooky things that have happened to us throughout the year. So far we’ve heard the story of when my parents lost the car (it was in our garage the whole time), how Naomi was there when my grandfather ‘lost’ his teeth, and when Naomi’s twin brother Noah found 100 dollars on the ground, and used it to buy cat liter for his imaginary cat!

“Nathan” my mother began “I think it’s your turn”

OK Nathan, think, what to say, what to say... I got it! Why not the story of why I’m afraid of roller coasters! “Alright” I think of how to begin, I take a breath and commence to tell the tale that still haunts me to this day.

“This story begins with a birthday wish I was determined to grand, that of a young ten year old boy named Noah” I glance over at Noah only to see his shift nervously at the memory of what happened that day.

“It was late June 2014, only a few days after Noah’s birthday and I had yet to give him his gift. I thought today would be the perfect opportunity to go, it was sunny, warm and overall a beautiful day, perfect for a trip to A.W.W. The AWW stands for Aloha’s World of Wonder, a.k.a the U.K’s best amusement park.”

“After grabbing everything we’d need, I called my younger brother over and got him to wait in the car while I made sure to tell our parents where we were going and of course, Naomi had to hear it, because the next thing you know she’s in the corner throwing a hissy fit because I’m taking Noah somewhere without her. Once my parents went over to settle her down, I stepped out the door, and we were off. After an agonising hour of driving we finally arrived at our destination, A.W.W.

I purchased our tickets, which was not easy considering I had a young boy buzzing with excitement next to me the whole time.”  I take a breath, once again looking over at him, this time to see him with a devilish smirk, obviously proud of those moments.

“After being at the park for about two hours, we stopped for lunch. While eating his sub, my younger brother noticed the biggest, scariest, most terrifying ride around. ‘Web surfer’ and extremely high, extremely fast new roller coaster that must’ve been recently added, for I don’t recall ever seeing it.

‘I wanna go on that one’ he said, now showing even more excitement than before. ‘Uhh, m-m-maybe l-later’ I spurted out, but in all reality I was just planning on stalling him with other rides until it was too late to ride that one. My plan backfired when he gave me the ‘I’m gonna cry now’ face, I mean, when my brother gave someone that face, there was NO resisting, his devilish eyes stare into your own with such disappointment and sadness that you just get the need to make it up to him in any way possible

‘fine’ I sighed, sounding more afraid than I meant to. ‘Yay!’ he screamed, all signs of sadness seem to have disappeared. ‘Let’s go, let’s go, LET’S GO!!!’ he yells, only adding to my nerve, I’ve never really been a fan of heights, so to say I was afraid is an understatement.”

“We approached the coaster at a speed a little too fast for my liking. We waited in line, my stomach churning at just the thought of riding it, and then, it was our turn. I climb into the cart as my lip starts to shake, I’ll be fine, Right?”

“It starts moving and then the panic sets in, I repress a scream as we begin to slowly inch upwards, me terrified, with a giggling Noah next to me. ‘Relax’ says Noah, in attempt to reassure me. We’re inching forwards, getting closer and closer to the top, until we sadly end up and the peak of the contraption. It slows down, and then suddenly lurches forwards, the whole cart now flying downwards. We reach the end of the large drop and I begin to calm down, at least the worst is over. Or at least I thought it was, because as we go down the second largest drop, I hear an ear piercing screech and then we stop mid drop, no longer moving.”

“Panic rises up inside of me, we’re STUCK!?!?!?  After about an hour someone was able to free us from the cart and fix the roller coaster, but I for one know I will NEVER ride a roller coaster again, nor will I ever take someone to AWW for their birthday, it’s just not worth it.”
