"Danny's not here now. You can say whatever you have to say to me." I bit out. I hated the fact that I still relied on him.
"I'm glad you're okay." The softness of his voice surprised me?
"Figured you didn't care anyway."
"Take that back." Defensive? Now that's interesting?
"Why? You shouldn't care. We're not friends anymore."
"Lexi. It's the middle of the night." I heard him sigh.
"I was happy today. With Danny. I want you to know that."
"I know."
"Tytan, he--he really cares about me and you're not even my friend anymore--I don't know why I'm explaining this to you! I don't owe you anything!"
"Are you still feeling cold?"
"You don't have to pretend to care."
"And I thought I was supposed to be the mean one." He chuckled.
"The car looks less eggy than the last time I saw it." I snorted.
"Yeah, I had that taken care of, you know Lexi, that wasn't a very nice thing to do."
"You did the same to my room."
"It was only revenge." Of course he'd say that.
"I don't have the energy to deal with you."
"You're the one who called me. And I was fucking worried about you Lexi."
"I can take care of myself."
"You'd be worried too if I called you in the middle of the night."
"Tytan, we're not friends anymore."
"Stop saying that. I've always been there for you and nothing is ever going to change that. Do you hear me Lexi? Nothing." I regretted it. He's the one who's supposed to let his out of control emotions get to him, but this time, it was on me. "Lexi, I love you. You're my best friend. I don't care what you have to say--" He still had so much faith in me?
"Can you just get me home please?"
"I'm sorry, I'm being mushy." He whispered.
He said nothing after that. We just sort of sat there in an ever growing awkward silence.
It was not a fun ride home.
"Hey Lexi?" He whispered as we pulled up, close my place.
"Yeah?" I was tired and irritable.
"Is it okay if I stay the night?"
"Uh? Yeah, I guess." I couldn't say no.
"Thank you."
We got out of the car. Home's here. Finally. I pulled out my key and just as I stuck it into the door I felt his hands around my shoulder from behind. He spun me around and placed my body against the door. His deep, scary eyes stared into my soul as his lips whispered something to me.
"If he makes you happy, I'll learn to be okay with it. Not that I have to, I know we're not friends anymore. But you know what I mean."
"I don't know what's wrong with you and at this point I'm too scared to ask."
"Functioning without a best friend is hard."
"You have Hunter." I reminded him.
"He's not you." He leaned in and I felt his shaky breath on my neck. "Lexi, I don't know if you can tell but I'm having a hard time."
