We all piled into my dad's van. Simon at the wheel with me and my dad anxiously behind him. I watched as we swerved through traffic with expert precision and kept our speedy pace as we continued our way back to L.A.
"What if we don't make it back in time?" Simon mumbled nervously.
"We will." I growled, eyeing the road carefully. We kept going through traffic, going past sports cars, vans and people going to work. We got honked at but we kept going, nothing could stop us right now.
Everything we loved. Everything we worked for was in danger. I could only picture Florida and Ty's pained faces. If Burnham got his hands on them, I would never get them back.
My thoughts were racing so much I barely noticed the figure standing in the middle of the highway. Darken figure, dressed in all black. I couldn't even see their face, but something tells me their eyes were trained on us.
"Why aren't you turning?" I panicked.
"The roads are blocked; we are going to hit them." He said, his hands shaking on the wheel. I watched as they just stood there and ignoring the oncoming traffic. The car went forward trying to screech onto the brakes, but something kept dragging us forward.
Until we came closer, when the person ran forward and grabbed the front of the van, lifting it above their head and crashing us upside down behind them.
"Hold on!" I yelled. Gripping the sides of the car, freezing the windows and doors. Keeping our weak protection together. Once the car was stable, Simon kicked the door out. Grabbing me and my dad, then my chair and getting us out.
I quickly situated myself.
If there was going to be a fight, I needed to at least be able to move.
I looked and saw a figure, long hair covering their face. I watched as they lifted their arm. Shooting some kind of attached cannon. As soon as I noticed, I shot back.
A large ball of ice formed in my grip, I tried to copy Ty's fireball but with my own powers. I hurled my ice chunk and watched as they expertly dodged it.
"Who is that?" My dad asked.
"One of Burnham's brainwashed soldiers." I told him. "Stay behind me. Simon go and take them from behind, I'll distract them."
"Got it." He nodded at me before disappearing. I went to form another ice ball before I noticed a figure standing in my line of fire.
"So, you found my little toy?" He asked, arms folded and eyes narrowed. I ignored his stares and continued fighting. Continued causing my distraction.
I kept going until I saw them fall down due to something hitting them. Something that wasn't me.
Simon.
I turned back to my dad, who was standing by the crashed van, nervously.
"Stay by the car." I tossed him my phone. "Call Ty, tell him that the warehouse is compromised and we need to start an evacuation." He nodded and started to do what I told him.
I started moving quickly on the chair. I spun the wheels faster and didn't stop.
I didn't stop when I saw another hit get landed on our attacker. I didn't even stop when I saw them grab Simon out of midair and slam him to the ground.
How dare they! Attack my friend like that?
I felt the anger build up in my body and continued to spin my wheels faster, without hesitation. I got close enough and froze my wheels so they would stop. I flew and tackled them down and froze them to the ground.
I realized quickly what we were up against. I noticed the metal enhancements as they glowed a slight blue. The cannon type arms attached to the arms, probably armed with several other weapons. The legs, looked similar. Cone shaped, coming up at the knees. Metal mask, covering the mouth and red goggles blocking the eyes.
I took a moment to realize it was a girl.
But to be honest, it took me longer to realize she was still human.
"Listen, I don't know who you are. But you were brainwashed." Simon said, coming up from behind me. "We can help you."
She didn't give him time to help, before she threw me off her and went to attack Simon.
My arms scratched against the cement as I rolled over on the street.
I saw her attempt to land a punch, but was much too slow for him. He jumped over her, wrapped his legs around her neck and sent her to the ground. I grabbed my chair and quickly threw myself on it.
I formed two giant icicles and threw them at an attempt to pin her down.
She rolled over, dodging my attacks and shot cannons at me. I raised my arms and watched a giant ice wall form. I part of it grazed my arm and I swore silently. I looked down at my arm and saw my icy armor block it. I turned around my wall and went to throw another ice ball, until I saw how close Simon and the attacker was.
I paused, there was no way I would hit her without hitting Simon too.
I watched as he threw a few punches and dodged most of hers. Then I had an idea.
Sure, it was a stupid ass idea, but it was better than nothing.
"Hey! Simon, send her up!" I yelled, he looked at me for a moment before understanding. He grabbed her by the shoulders, flipped over her and kicked her back.
She flew a few feet in the air, I shot a ball of ice and hit her. Sending her summersaulting off of the highway. We moved to look over and detain her, to maybe even try to help her.
But she was gone.
She vanished like a ghost under the bridge, there was no sign of her whatsoever. I shook it off and grabbed Simon's arm.
"We fended her off. The warehouse is the priority." He nodded and we ran back to the crashed van.
Well, it used to be crashed. Now it was flipped over and windowless.
"I crashed out the windows so we could see. The engine should be working as well." My dad yelled as he got back in the car. We followed his lead as I got in and Simon threw my chair back in.
He got in again and slammed his foot on the floor. And we were sent back on our way to the warehouse, shooting through and around the traffic.
Still, I could see Burnham sitting in the backseat. He glared at me, and I knew what that meant.
We were losing.
Everything.
