We hopped on a bus heading to our destination. We tried to sit in the back and draw as less attention to ourselves as we could. But considering our predicament we still drew some attention.
I shoved my white hair into my hat while Ty put his hood up. He even let Florida use one of his sweaters to sort of disguise herself. It was the best we could do, but it seemed to work. No one talked to us, we seemed to be hiding pretty well.
Once we got closer to the location we realized it was some kind of abandoned storage unit we looked around slowly.
"Hey you skinny invisible asshole! Where are you?" Ty yelled into the empty area. I just punched him slightly, he just moaned and complained.
"What are you doing?" I hissed.
"Looking for Simon. I can't really see him with my eyes Mia." I just growled at him and told him to be silent while I rolled through the empty area. That was when I caught movement behind me, I automatically turned my chair and lifted my hands, ready for an attack.
That was when I saw him. For the first time in weeks. He looked shaggy and dirty, his hair was long and his once clean shaved side of his hair was partially grown out and messy. He even had slight stubble growing and a lost look in his eye.
Yet, he still had my beanie on. It was dirty and stretched, but it was there.
"Simon?" Florida asked, approaching him slowly.
"What are you guys doing out here?" He asked, like he was shocked to see us. I just narrowed my eyes at him.
"I should ask you the same thing, after you disappeared." He looked at us silently before he shook his head.
"Look, I am so sorry. Please, but we need to get to cover now!" I didn't trust him for a moment. He looked broken and desperate. He didn't look like the same person who left us. He looked like he was through hell and back.
I hesitated when I heard Florida's worried voice behind me. I had to trust him, I don't know what he was scared of right now but we had to follow him. I just nodded and followed him to one of the storage lockers.
It was dark and musty, it smelled like mold and it was no place to be. But it was where we were. Once we were inside I confronted him.
"Where were you?" I asked him, yelling slightly. "Where did you go!"
"It doesn't matter Mia!" He begged, looking at me with tears in his eyes. "Please, it has been a rough couple of weeks."
"A rough couple of weeks?" I felt Ty try and hold my arm but I pulled it back roughly. I don't know why, or what started it but all my pent up frustrations came raging out at my friend. My friend.
All I could think about is how he left, how he left us to deal with everything. To deal with Julie, to deal with the destruction that Burnham left. Everything, that he just bailed on us, on his family.
"Let me tell you about a rough couple of weeks! I found out my best friend wants to kill me, that she has been tortured and broken almost beyond repair. I found out that the things I see, the breakdowns I have are all me, that I am broken beyond repair. I travelled across the country, was in a bus crash, had to not only take care of myself but a child and a blind person! And you just backed out and left!" I fumed at him, I was so angry.
I don't even think I was specifically mad at him; I was just mad in general. I was mad at the world, I was mad at my life, that I could never be normal, that I would never remember being normal. That chaos and torture was my life and I just had to accept it, that accepting it was my life now.
