With Amelia being completely alone downstairs, the looming potential of a war, and my mixed feelings about Silas there was no way I would be getting any sleep. For the second night in a row I spent all night in the infirmary. At least I could check off one fear from my list of broken pieces.
"Have you been here all night, again?" Matthew's voice made me jump. Some how I hadn't heard him enter. Remembering his question I turned slightly to look at him and nodded.
"You won't be much help if she wakes up and you are dead on your feet from exhaustion." Matthew said gently.
He was right but knowing that didn't make it any easier to sleep. Instead of thinking of an argument I simply nodded again and turned back to face the baby.
"If you are going to stay perhaps we should talk. We haven't had a session lately." Matthew said.
I nodded again. Maybe I did need to talk. Matthew looked surprised by my easy agreement but recovered quickly to his stoic expression. He grabbed a whiteboard and handed it to me as he took a seat.
"Is there anything in particular you'd like to discuss?" Matthew asked.
'It's your meeting.' I wrote on the board.
"Fair enough. You look like you are not sleeping. Is something bothering you?" He asked.
I nodded.
"Care to share?" He asked.
I let out a puff of air and held up three fingers.
"Three things?" He asked.
I nodded again.
"Ok, let's start with the first one." Matthew said.
'I can't stand the idea of her being down here alone.' I wrote.
Matthew nodded. He looked like he genuinely understood how I felt about it.
"Well as you know, Samuel agreed to the transfusions. His blood is a perfect match as we had hoped so we should be able to start transfusing today. I'm fairly certain we will see results as early as tomorrow. If you'd like I can make some arrangements for her to stay with you until we find her family." Matthew said
'Me? But I don't know anything about babies.' I wrote.
"There's really only one way to learn. Caring is the first and most important step. Besides I think it could be beneficial for both of you." Matthew shrugged.
'How so?' I asked.
"One of your strengths, I've noticed, is taking care of others. Taking care of Amelia will help reaffirm that you still have this strength and will show you how great a strength it really is." He explained.
I shook my head no.
'I can't do that.' I wrote.
"Ok, just let me know if you change your mind." He said. "What's number 2?" He asked.
I furrowed my brow and looked up at him in confusion. I couldn't figure out what number two he was talking about.
"There are three things bothering you. 1 is Amelia. What is number 2." He clarified. I should have known that. I was defiantly suffering from my lack of sleep.
'I'm a traitor.' I wrote.
"Why do you feel this way?" He asked curiously.
'My pack is going to be invaded. People are going to die because of me. People I grew up with and I've known my whole life. There are innocent people there.' I wrote.
