"You do know it's customary to call before a visit, right?"
We both turned toward the new voice. I didn't have to guess who the man glaring at Silas was. He was built tall and wide like most of the alphas I'd had the unfortunate fate in meeting. It had to be Alpha Alexander Thane.
"I'm sorry for the mess." Silas said.
"It's been a while since I've seen you that angry. I almost forgot how messy it can get." Alpha Thane shrugged.
Silence grimaced. Alpha Thane turned slightly. His eyes did a quick sweep over me and I had to resist the urge to hide behind Silas.
"Is this who I think it is?" He asked looking back at Silas.
Silas nodded once in acknowledgment.
"Does she know?" He asked.
Silas shook his head no.
"You're playing a dangerous game Silas." said.
"This isn't a game." Silas said, "I'm refusing to make a bad situation worse by claiming to be the very thing that did the most damage. Don't tell me how to handle a situation you've never been in."
Alpha Thane tilted his head curiously as he regarded Silas. Silas was silent. He didn't give an answer to Thanes unasked question. Alpha Thane dropped it and turned toward me.
"My apologies Rylan. I'm not used to having house guests so my hospitality is lacking." Alpha Thane said.
My eyes widened. I hadn't told him my name and neither had Silas. I turned to look at Silas.
'How does he know my name?' I asked.
"Xane..." Silas trailed off as he tried to answer my question. "She wants to know how you know her name..." Silas redirected my question to Alpha Thane.
"We've met before." Alpha Thane said simply. "But you probably don't remember me... I'm Alexander Thane."
'When did we meet?' I signed. Silas repeated the question for me and sighed.
"We met the day you died." Thane said.
I blinked and looked back and forth between Alpha Thane and Silas. He couldn't be serious. Obviously, I wasn't dead. I searched his face but I couldn't see any sign that he was joking.
'I haven't died.' I signed nervously.
"We thought you did. Your injuries were worse than Amelia's and you were only a few years older." Silas said quietly.
'What? Why didn't you tell me this?' I asked. I was surprised that he remembered something from my past that he hadn't shared with me.
"Because it was my fault..." Silas said. He shot Alpha Thane a glare for bringing it up. I turned back to Alpha Thane and gave him a questioning look. I wanted answers.
"Silas was trying to help us all escape. He created a diversion and took out several of the guards but in the end, we were still just kids and they caught us." Alpha Thane said.
"I thought I was ready for them to punish me. It was usually a whip or a fight and at this point I didn't mind the pain that much. I thought there wasn't anything they could do but they didn't take it out on me..." Silas shook his head. He wouldn't meet my eyes even when I reached out to grab his hand that rested near my leg.
"Devlin said 'Disobedience leads to death.' One of his wolves grabbed you by your neck with his teeth and threw you against the wall. Your head hit first. The force of the impact echoed through the entire room. When you hit the ground that was it. You didn't move or breathe. There was a pool of blood around you... We were sure you were dead." Alpha Thane said shaking his head.
