Chapter 21
"Do you know anything about Myra?" I ask softly, not wanting to be heard as I lay out on my bed early in the morning, talking to Jess. I haven't seen her in a few days and to be honest I miss having a friend to talk and hangout with, but then again Donovan is a distraction that I don't mind having.
Jess scoffs, "If you're talking about the she-devil that created Donovan, then yes -- I do. It was the happiest day for Steven's side of the family; which is my family, when they got a divorce." She drones and I raise my eyebrows. I can't believe an entire side of the family was excited for a divorce.
"What makes her so horrible?" I ask interestingly and I can practically imagine if Jess were here; her sitting on my bed with her hands making animated gestures as she speaks.
"Besides the fact that she's a total bitch, she's just evil. She despises Donovan although she freaking birthed him. I mean, how can you hate someone you held for nine months and pushed out of your cooch? My side of the family; my mom in particular, thinks it's because Donovan wasn't a girl. My mom always told Steven that something was off about Myra, but Steven was in love at the time and he never listened to my mother anyways because that's his sister and there's just no way in hell that he can listen to his sister -- men." She snorts. Although her story is very intriguing, I can't help but think how someone can hate Donovan.
Well, I take that back, cause there are some days and then referencing back to the beginning, about two months ago, I hated him too. But this is his mother we're talking about and it's completely different. I frown, "So it's because he's a boy?" I ask again, just to be sure; to understand and Jess laughs softly.
"I know you want to get to the bottom of this for Donovan's sake, but I'm sure that's not really the reason. I think the only person who could really know is--"
"Donovan." I finish, knowing the answer even before I called Jess up to be nosy. I also know that it's going to be like pulling teeth to get him to tell me the reason he calls his mother by her first name rather than 'mom'. I bite my lip and sit up slowly in bed, "Hey, I'll talk to you later. I'm going to talk to Donovan to see if I can get something out of him. Oh! And also, Donovan kissed me. Love you, bye!" I rush out happily and before I slide my phone to end, I hear her scream like a fangirl.
Laughing lightly, I throw my comforter off of me and stretch, then cover my mouth while I let out a long yawn. I stand up and leave my room quietly as it's early in the morning. I need to speak to Donovan though, because he was so consoling after the assault and I want to return the favor.
And I mostly want answers.
I glance at my clock on my vanity across the room to see it's almost seven and that Donovan is most likely still asleep. I shuffle myself over to my room door, loving the feel of the carpet under my feet, then I slowly peel my door open, avoiding noise. I look out into the dimmed hallway to listen to the completely silent house. I creep out into the hall and across, then try Donovan's room door.
Locked.
Oh wait, but he also shares a door with the bathroom.
I quickly tiptoe into the bathroom and when I try the door in the far left corner, I get giddy as the knob twists and unlocks. Score! I step inside his room, close and lock the door, then walk over to his bed, but get distracted. I've only ever been in his room once and it was dark because I was putting his drunk ass to bed.
Now looking around it, he's actually really clean and has a lot of things to look at. Posters of bands, photos, magazines laid out on his computer stand in the corner by the window and... trophies of some sort.
