Chapter 27

"Wow, look who decided to wake up..." I shoot a dazzling morning smile at Donovan and ignore his attitude. That's the morning for him -- bringing out his grouchy side. Which is sexy so it's okay with me.

He trudges into the kitchen, pauses by the table, scowls at me and then keeps walking. My mom turns around from the stove and smiles lovingly at him, "Morning Best Man. Would you like pancakes, eggs and bacon?" She asks and I grin as he clears his throat and ducks his head down; trying to cover his blush.

"Yeah, thanks." He grunts and takes the plate she hands out. I continue eating my food and just enjoy the atmosphere of the house for a while. Mom's blissfully making breakfast and me and Donovan are peacefully eating it. I think we both got exciting news last night, so it's buttered us up for this morning.

Well, both of us got somewhat exciting news. I wouldn't be so sure to call the birth control pills exciting news.

Steven soon comes downstairs to join us for breakfast. Ridiculously, I start to get jealous as I watch my mother interact with Steven like a couple should. Of course I'm not upset; because they deserve to be happy, but I'm just jealous me and a certain someone can't be as open like them.

Sighing softly; I push around a few eggs before popping them into my mouth and chewing a little too hard and loud. I feel eyes on me and I pause with my fork full of pancakes suspended in the air as I look over to find Donovan staring at me with a straight face. I look away and just focus on finishing my food before I start giving myself away through actions and whatnot. Donovan already knows me too well.

My mom and Steven finally join us at the table, "Good thing you get off of house arrest in less than a week, Don. Wedding rehearsals are in a few days too. We'll kind of need the Best Man." Steven says with a smile and I giggle as Donovan turns a slight shade of pink.

"Ah, thanks dad." He mutters; most likely embarrassed by the attention he's getting. I smile and then finish my food, but get distracted by an incoming text. I frown a little as I see it's from Max, but once I read it, it makes me smile. I glance up and unintentionally gain everyone's attention.

"Hey mom, I'll be back in a few hours. Max is going to pick me up and we're going to hang at the mall for a few hours. That okay?" I ask and the room seems to still. I purposefully keep my eyes away from Donovan, cause I can imagine the look he's giving me.

Steven looks up from his plate and frowns, and it's like looking at Donovan, "This is that nineteen year old guy?" He looks at me and then my mom and me both speak simultaneously.

        "Yes."

"Oh... well, what time will you two be back?" He asks and I shrug.

"He's coming to get me at noon, so maybe three at the latest." I honestly say.

He grimaces, "Just um, make sure you text your mother every hour -- I-I mean as long as that's okay with you Janine." He looks over at her and looks relieved as she nods.

"Agreed. Thanks, hun." She rubs his broad shoulder and I smile, then quickly push my chair back and stand to clean up my mess. Cleaning up my mess will stall Donovan, cause he won't get up when I do.

Unless my mom of course decides to be too nice, "Don't worry about cleaning up. I've got it." She sentences me to instant death.

Donovan and I both get up and leave the kitchen together, then I race for the stairs as soon as we're out of earshot. I can hear him leaping up the stairs behind me, but I keep going -- until he catches me of course.
