Chapter 29
"If you talk to that bear again, I'm going to kick you down your stairs." Jess threats as we're in my room, hanging out. I stroke the soft fur of my beloved furry friend and ignore her callous ways.
She groans, "Oh come on! Just forgive him already! I haven't seen him look like a kicked puppy since... Well, I've actually never seen him look like a kicked puppy! You're dangerous to him!" She shrieks.
"Then me and him are so even. Besides, this is good because he needs to know that I don't play when I'm mad. He needs to understand I won't just fall at his feet in forgiveness every time he does something wrong."
"You mean, even though you want to?" Jess pries and I roll my eyes heavily.
"Shut. Up. I know what I'm doing." I hiss. Hopefully I know what I'm doing. I snatch Beigebee back and hug him, "And you better leave my goddamn bear alone!" I giggle as Jess looks horrified. I start to inform her of the details for the wedding and we talk about what she should wear, since my mom is picking my dress out. The colors for the wedding is a pale yellow.
"Damn, you're gonna look smoking in pale yellow." She winks and I roll my eyes, but knowing it's true. She looks down at her phone and after awhile, her head shoots up; eyes gleaming with excitement. I narrow my eyes, about to ask her what's up with her devious look, but she answers like I knew she would, "Kevin just asked me out tonight... to a party! I've never been to a party while having a boyfriend. Let alone a senior boyfriend!" She says with so much excitement.
I smile, "You and him are so damn cute. I hope you have tons of fun."
She smiles wider at me, "I will, because you're going with me too."
Oh, hell no, "No, no I am not. Jess, the last time I went to a party like that, I got assaulted. I'm sure I'm never going to another one again." I mutter, stroking my bear, but he gets snatched away from me rudely.
"That's the thing! You need to face the fear! Learn from the mistake... Well, the tragedy. Watch your drink, hell -- don't drink anything and stay with me the entire time. I will not let anything happen to you. Zara, you're the best friend I've had in my history of best friends and I trust you. So trust me." She grabs my hand and squeezes it and I feel the wave of sympathy rush over me.
Jess is really a great friend.
"Okay... but you know what this means. I have to tell Donovan."
"Of course. Chances are he's going anyways, but of course. I'll go with you if you want."
"No, things aren't the same between us still, so I need to do this on my own." I get up from my bed and straighten out my clothes, then leave the room. Leaving my door cracked, I walk across the hall and go to knock on Donovan's door, when I can faintly hear him having a conversation on the phone.
I'll just come back.
I start to lean away from the door, until I hear the hostility in his voice, "Call me again and we're gonna be having problems." He threats. I unthinkingly lean my ear back onto the door and listen -- hard. Donovan's voice is unwavering, bland and swelled with annoyance, "You know why. You know what you did and I shouldn't have to speak of it... Do you really get why I'm upset? You don't get it... Layne, give it a rest--"
Holy fuck, he's talking to Layne.
I press my ear harder on the door and hear him sigh harshly, "You just, you were never good for me and I've realized that now... You don't need to worry about who the fuck I'm talking to in my life. She's more of a woman than you'll ever be... I thought so too at one point, but only because my mother drilled into my head that I could do no better than you, but I have... I do mean that, with everything I have in me... You wouldn't fucking dare, because you don't know and whoever you supposedly heard this from, is wrong. I suggest if you're still getting your information from Myra; stop it. She's only making you more fucked up than you already are... I don't lie and you know it... The sex?! You want to go there, fine. You were an easy fuck. One touch and kiss and I could get you to lay on anything and open your legs for me, you had no respect for yourself and I'd bet my life that if we were talking in person right now and I told you to lay down, you'd drop like a fly... Because it's true... I'm not heartless, I'm honest and I don't give a shit about your feelings... We're done with this conversation... Goodbye Layne and this time, lose my number for good."
