Chapter 22
Come on Zara, you can steer this in the right direction. She didn't see me and Donovan kiss or anything like that.
I sit up straighter and watch as Steven's face looks utterly confused, "You two have met before? When was this?" He asks me more than her, but she butts in like he was talking to her.
"Yes we have. At Panera Bread yesterday night over out in my town. She was having dinner with Donovan." She snitches and I watch Steven look at me with furrowed brows.
He raises one slowly, "What were you and Donovan doing at Panera Bread having dinner, half an hour away from home?" He asks me and I urge my mind to work fast to get me and Donovan off the hook. We can't end this while we're just getting started. Hell I refuse to let us go down this quickly.
"We told you we were going out, we just wanted to go out somewhere new; for me anyways, since I've been having problems with some of the older kids in this town. He took me out to dinner there and we just chilled, then Myra came in and basically harassed us. She was so rude to Donovan and I." I quickly say; partially telling a lie, but the ending part being completely true.
Steven glares at her, "Harassing them? Myra, what have I talked to you about our son? I don't know what the hell happened while he was living with you, for you two to just hate each others guts, but you are not going to ruin his life. He is an adult now and you need to treat him like one. I'm sick of the feud!"
"Well I'm sick of these lying teens who need to be put back into their place. Maybe you should look more into your little family here and find out what's going on before you--"
"MYRA!" Steven roars, the loudest I've ever heard him get. I jump in fear and she barely flinches as he continues on, "YOU CAME HERE TO GET DOCUMENTS ON SOMETHING. YOU HAVE YOUR PAPERS, NOW LEAVE IMMEDIATELY AND DO NOT COME BACK HERE AGAIN WITHOUT CONTACTING ME FIRST!" He snarls heatedly and I'm on the verge of tears.
Myra looks at him with pure hatred burning in her eyes, then she glances at me and smirks angrily. Almost as if a silent 'this isn't over, bitch' type of smirk. She sucks in a breath, "Very well, Steven. I see I'm no longer wanted here. I'll contact you first for anything else I might need--"
"And I'll most likely mail it. When will you understand that you've done too much damage and aren't welcomed here? Goodbye." He growls, then watches her take a few steps back towards the corner, before she fully turns around and walks away. We hear the door slam and he finally turns towards me and softens his face.
He looks guilty as I'm probably looking so terrified right now. Not even my dad ever yells that loud. I cover my mouth with my hands as a stupid sob slips out, "Zaria, I am so sorry, sweetheart. Please don't be afraid--"
"It's okay. I'm just shaken up, that's all. I want to go to bed now. Goodnight, Steven." I whimper, then without a response, I dash out of the living room, to the hall and up the stairs, bolting into my room. I close the door as quietly as possible, then lock it and throw myself onto my bed. My tears are flowing freely as I think about how angry Steven got just by Myra's presence.
She's obviously someone we shouldn't be associated with, but I've unfortunately fallen into her interest category all because I'm linked to Donovan. I hope it doesn't make him skeptical on what we have going on. He hates labels, but his mother can tell we have something more than step sibling bonding brewing and I'm afraid she will try to reveal that, which will evidently take us out.
