Chapter 18

"Oh my Zaria Aniya, I missed you so much!" My mother gushes and I feel my face getting even hotter as she just uses my middle name without any caution. I'm hoping Donovan isn't listening in, but then again I know he is. The only reason he escaped from our kiss was because of our parents unexpected arrival.

Or maybe they told us, but we've just been too distracted to have even known. I'm going to go with that one.

My face is pressed tightly against my moms low cut summer tank top and I finally snap myself out of my sulking thoughts and let my rightful reactions for this moment take over. This is my mother, I haven't seen her for an entire month and I missed her like hell. I squeeze my arms around her tightly, "I missed you so much, too, mom." I finally whisper out and she croons with happiness.

A deep chuckle erupts from behind us and my mom disconnects from me, to turn around and smile at Steven. He's also earned a tan and he doesn't look bad. I scan their mood with each other and can tell that it's going to be a little uncomfortable for me and Donovan as Steven sets the bags down by the bottom of the staircase and directly tangles his arms around my moms body.

She turns crimson, "Zaria, I feel like I've missed you grow. You look so lively -- some color is in your cheeks. Everything been okay here?" She asks cautiously and I can see she's nervous. Bad things never happen to me cause she's usually always with me, but we both knew what would happen as soon as she told Steven she'd marry him.

I push the thoughts of me being cheated on and ràped to the deepest part of my mind and smile softly, "Everything's been fine."

"Donovan wasn't too bad, was he?" Steven cuts in and I blush at the sound of his name.

        "Um, he--"

        "DONOVAN!"

       Dammit.

I focus on the ground and ignore inner Zaria. Oh you little bitch, don't you even dare shunt us back to the corner where Donovan wasn't even paying attention to us. That fucking God of a man just blessed you with a kiss, you better have the decency to acknowledge him when he comes down those stairs.

Gosh, inner Zaria can be assertively scary.

Donovan's pounding footsteps come bounding down the stairs and when he reaches the bottom, I look up at him to see him looking normal and calm as ever. He gazes at me for a little longer than necessary before turning his attention to his dad, "Hey guys -- you're tan. Fun trip?" He asks calmly and Steven squints at him.

"Very. I assure that everything went perfect here?" He raises a brow and I'm shocked to see Donovan's jaw clench in annoyance. Holy shit, I'm sure he's thinking of what I pushed into the back of my mind.

"Yeah. We actually started to get along too, really well." He husks out and I widen my eyes at him. He sends me a wolfish grin and I blush quickly; neither of our parents catching the sensuousness of our actions towards one another.

Steven and my mother look ecstatic, "Fabulous! Oh sweetheart, can we all go out tonight and celebrate? The step siblings for finally getting along and us coming back to reunite with our family?" She asks happily and he grins down at her lovingly. Steven's starting to grow on me too. I enjoy the way he looks at my mother. He may not be my father by blood, but he's making it work by the love he's giving to my mother.

"I think that's a great idea. You two up for it?" Steven asks me and Donovan and I nod; not being able to form words, but Donovan's words seem to speak for the both of us.
