Gerard Way was blind. It happened when he was 18. He had noticed his visual field decreasing and told his mom, and when they went in to a doctor he was declared legally blind. What went on around him was a huge mess of dark blobs to him now. The figures of his family moved in odd ways, and he could no longer read their faces.
He was unable to see clearly what he loved so much. He couldn't see his brother smile wildly when he won a game of Smash Bros, he couldn't see his grandmother grin at him when he got something right in a piano lesson. Most of fall, he couldn't draw anymore and that broke his heart to pieces. His number one passion was forfeit due to this stupid medical condition.
It's not fucking fair, he told himself, why did this have to happen to me? I was going to be a comic book artist!
He fell into depression because of it. He sank into a deep pit of self hatred and he cursed at God for allowing something like this to happen to him. He cried himself to sleep at night knowing he'd never see the faces of the people he loved again.
Over time, it became a naturalized thing for him. He'd gotten used to having his mom or Mikey helping him around, and he'd memorized the layout of his house and could walk it without bumping into anything. He became used to his curse, and by the time he was 20 he found a way to use echo location to get around.
Although he couldn't see the beauty of the world around him anymore, he was finally content with his life.
I'm fine, he thought, this life is fine. At least I'm alive.
After his 20th birthday, he met a girl. The two of them hit it off on the spot when she talked about the Star Wars shirt he was wearing that day. The two of them met up frequently, Gerard having his brother take him to the library pretty much every day to talk to her.
Their friendship progressed, and she started coming around Gerard's house to hang out with him. They would sit, and she would describe in the most detail she could what things she found beautiful looked like. He was mesmerized by her descriptions, always listening so closely to her voice ramble on about shapes and colors.
He found himself hopelessly in love with this girl, even if he couldn't see her. He saw her in the tones of voice she used. He taught himself to picture her face when she spoke with her giddy voice. He longed to see her for himself.
The two started dating after five months of talking non stop. They had been sitting together on the couch in Gerard's room, his head resting on her lap while Queen played softly behind them. She had been running her hands through his hair softly, humming along with Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon.
Gerard hummed, enjoying her affection and without realizing it he let the words "I love you" slip out of his mouth.
The words took the girl by surprise, for sure. But she was more surprised to know he loved her back then at his forwardness. She'd loved him from the moment she met him.
She didn't care that he was blind. She loved to take care of him and be someone for him to rely on. She became not only his best friend, but his caretaker and confidante.
"Shit did I say that out loud?" His head perked up from her lap as he turned in her direction.
She giggled and stroked his cheek. "Yeah, you did."
"Fuck, i'm sorry, i didn't mean to freak you out or anything." He sat completely up and rambled, scared that she didn't feel the same and that he'd ruined everything.
"Did you mean it?"
He turned his head away, ashamed. "Yeah."
She smiled, letting out a small sigh. Reaching over, she cupped his cheek and tuned his head back to her, rubbing his cheek with her thumb lightly. "It's ok." She reassured, "I love you too, Gee."
"Really?"
"Yes. I do."
"It doesn't bother you that i don't even know what you look like?"
"Not at all."
"You sure? i mean my disability shouldn't get in the way of you having a good and happy relationshi-"
He didn't finish, as he was cut off by his love kissing him swiftly on the lips. When they parted he let her name slip from his lips in a meek whisper.
"I don't care if you can't see me. I love you and I want to be with you." She whispered back, placing another loving kiss on his lips.
He felt like crying, but not out of sadness. Rather, out of joy and love. She wanted to be with him despite his disability and he was overjoyed.
She loved him no matter what his problem was. That was more than enough for him.
