The transport bounces along the desert road to the base where you were going to be stationed. A year ago life was much more simpler. You were going for your master's degree in physics and were enjoying an internship with a local research center. Little did you know that so-called research center was actually a private military company specializing in anti-terrorism. Next thing you know you're being trained to go fight in Iraq, where the company was collaborating with the United States Navy SEALs to take down the terrorist organization Malayikat Allah.
You had been in training for several months. It was a hard decision. Do you quit the job and continue studying for your masters, or do you take a chance and go one a life changing opportunity. After careful consideration and talking it over with your parents, you decided to go to Iraq. You didn't know what you'd be doing there, but it probably had something to do with designing weapons.
Eventually your transport stops and the back door opens. The desert heat hits you immediately, and you begin to sweat due to that as well as the nerves you're experiencing. Before you in the desert sun is a functional military base. You slowly step out, taking it all in. Your boss had beaten you there, and walks up to the transport with two soldiers next to him.
"(l/n). Welcome to Iraq," he says, shaking your hand. "Next to me is Lieutenant Commander MacQuarie of the Navy SEALs and to my right is Sergeant Suarez of the company we're a part of."
"It's an honor to be here," you say, hoping you soon can walk into the shaded tent or the air conditioned military base.
"We have heard good things from Director Cartier, and hope you can help us in the aid to fight against terrorism," MacQuarie says.
"I'm glad to be of service," is all you say. You felt intimidated by the people in front of you, but did your best to not show it.
"Sergeant Suarez will show you around. Be prepared to come to my office by 15:00 so we can go through the rest of the procedure of you being here. And again, welcome to Iraq," Director Cartier says before walking off with Lieutenant Commander MacQuarie.
Suarez (who told you to call him by his first name Diego) shows you around the base, from the mess hall to the laboratory to the war rooms. There were simulators to prepare for missions and a break room that had it all. Video games, a pinball machine, and even a chess board. You're dropped off at your barrack and leave your things by the foot of your bed before changing into proper military wear to go to Cartier's office.
You were assigned to be in the laboratory unless called upon to go into combat. The order was simple. Research the development of weapons and resources that could be used against the enemy. You felt you were capable of doing this, so it seemed easy enough. You were to be given a partner the next day to develop a non-lethal device to be used to capture some terrorists for questioning.
"Sounds great. Looking forward to working with them on the device," you say.
"Private (L/n). The person you will be partnered with is Elżbieta Bosak. She comes from Wroclaw, Poland, and is part of our organization. She is a great soldier, coming from a military high school and her family has a history of being in GROM, the Polish Special Forces. Fair warning though. She has quite the attitude, is hard to work with at times, and doesn't take to orders very well," Director Cartier informs.
"As long as she and I have the same ideas, I think we'll be okay."
"I like your attitude. One of the reasons why I asked you to come here. You are to be expected at the lab by 09:00."
"Yes sir."
You get up and salute your advisor before doing activities to pass the time, mainly exploring and hanging out in the break room. You met people from the organization, as well as some Navy SEALs. One seal in particular was Craig Jenson, who looked like a pirate and coincidentally shared the nickname of one; Blackbeard. He was far from one, though. He was warm hearted, and told you what to expect being here, as well as about himself.
