It takes a few weeks to get a worthwhile prototype, and the process was quite difficult. You had to pull all nighters and deal with some of the duties of the base. Ela had her own duties to attend to, too, so there was some juggling of who was working on what. As time went on, the trust grew, and soon you were good friends. Sometimes having a common goal forms good bonds, even with the most unlikely people.
Ela had on her punk rock music as you were typing in some algorithms in the computer. The music didn't bother you at all. She just put it on one time and it so happened you liked her style of music. She liked rock, mainly punk, heavy metal, and a bit of grunge. Coulda been something much worse. Anyway, Ela was getting ready for you to give her the prompt to begin testing for the mine. It had been a long road to get this thing made, but here you were. Hopefully this would be the one.
"Alright. Test number 45. Arm the mine." You say behind a computer.
Ela hits a button and the gray sticky stuff begins to expand. "Armed." You get a test dummy ready to be pushed so you can see if the mine would go off. "Hey (y/n) (she started to call you by your first name after a few days of working together)?" You look from behind the dummy and raise your eyebrows. "Thanks for doing this. Normally people give up with me the first few days, or even treat me well for that matter, so thanks for putting up with me."
You take this in. She had been a rebel during the process, but you were able to stick it out. You cared for her and treated her with respect, and it seems like she had never had someone do that for her before. You nod your head and say, "Thanks for the opportunity. You've shown yourself to be a great partner. It's been fun."
Ela gives a warm smile and you couldn't tell if it was the red light reflecting on her cheeks from the mine or if she was blushing. Eager to hurry the moment, she throws the mine on the wall. You push the test dummy and the mine goes off with a loud boom. Unfortunately for you, you're affected by it too, and your ears ring. Your world starts to sway as you fall down. Lucky for you, you're caught by Ela before you hit the ground.
"(Y/n)! Are you alright?" she asks with panic before muttering some words in Polish.
Your world starts to get better and after a few seconds you're seeing normally again. You blink a few times and see Ela's worried face. You crack a smile and say, "Well, it works."
Ela looks away and laughs a bit. "You had me worried for one second there."
"Only one?"
"Yeah. Why would it be longer? You think I care?"
"Well, the only thing separating me from the floor is your arms, so you obviously do." Ela sighs in defeat and helps you up. "Thought you were going to drop me."
"I was tempted to. Kind of wish I did now."
"Glad you didn't." You begin to dust yourself off. "Wouldn't have been fun for me."
"Yeah, but it would've been funny."
"It would hurt."
"Are you that much of a wimp?"
"Not physically. Emotionally."
"Oh shut up you big baby."
"Hey. Some babies are cute. Does that mean I'm cute?"
Ela chooses not to answer that and instead asks a different question. "What should we call the mine?"
"It's yours. You get to decide."
Ela thinks for a few moments. "Grzmot. Polish for thunder, because it's loud and makes a flash of light."
"Seems reasonable enough. Well, want to grab a couple of drinks for a job well done? Meet at the break room?"
