While your girlfriend was doing virtual hostage missions, you were getting to know your job and a few of the people around you. Elena was your supervisor and would tell you what was wanted, but overall you were in control for the most part. Currently, your job was to test some gadgets and see if there could be any improvements made.
"So what's this device here?" You pick up some device that has a screen, but nothing is being shown. Probably because it was off.
"That's a device used by Jack, also known as Pulse." Elena informs you. "I'm almost done with testing this, but it's pretty simple. It displays the heartbeats of others through the use of microwave radar technology."
You turn on the device, but don't see anything. "I can see a problem already. It doesn't work."
Elena laughs. "That's because it was modified to not work on friendlies. It still detects them, but it won't display them." You look amazed, and you were. The device could be programmed to locate people behind walls or structures, and the application of it could be beneficial to more than just an anti-terrorist organization. Almost like she was reading your mind (could the device read thoughts too?), Elena continues. "The application for the device work in our favor, but Jack has made this more for humanitarian purposes."
"Like finding living people buried under rubble after an earthquake, right?" You hand the device back to Elena.
"Exactly. Urban search and rescue."
"So the man who created the device is the one who uses it?"
"Indeed. You'll find that as a commonality with some of these devices." She sets the Cardiac Sensor down and makes a couple of notes on her clipboard before motioning you to follow her. "We have quite a few more devices to go over and make improvements to, but for your first couple of days I need you to get familiar with these devices. Once familiar with them, list some pros and cons about each one. When you're done with that we can think of some changes and tell whoever owns the device."
You nod in understanding. "Sounds like a plan. Any gadget you want me to start with first?"
"Sí. Un momento." Elena goes into a room which you could only assume was where some of the gadgets were. She returns smiling and holding a Grzmot mine. "Your first test should be with something already familiar to you. This'll get the quicker ones out of the way so you don't need to familiarize yourself with them."
You smirk and hold the Grzmot mine in your hand. It's surprising how familiar it felt and looked after all these years, especially because you weren't the one who used it. The sticky gel swells up like it should and you arm the mine. Or at least you're about to. Elena has other plans and stops you.
"Nonono! Not here."
"Oh. Haha. Sorry." You can feel your cheeks heat up a bit from embarrassment.
"Está bien. We have a room for gadget testing around the corner. It has a viewing room, test dummies. Whatever you need." You see Elena think for a couple of moments. "Actually, I'll show you how everything works first. We'll use my Black Mirrors for an example."
She grabs only what you'd assume to be her device and you follow her into the room. Her example seems pretty self explanatory. Set up the device, do some testing with the dummies or other options within the viewing room, and then record your findings with some modifications. You thank her for the demonstration and allow her to stick around for your first test. You arm the mine and throw it onto the wall. Then you send a test dummy at it, causing the mine to go off with the loud noise it was known for. Brings back old memories of Iraq when you were testing this with Ela.
"Well, glad to know it still works." You say to yourself and start to write down your findings.
"I'm just glad I'm usually on her side when it comes to teams." Elena admits.
