“My mother died when I was born, doctor said they could have saved her or me, they chose me of course. They had no way of knowing if I was the next heir or not and to kill the heir was punishable by death.” Lyn started, the room had grown quiet as they all settled in to listen.
“I grew up with my father blaming me for her death. If I hadn’t been born his true love would still be alive. It started by simply being raised by the servants. It was a lonely existence but I learned my way around the castle, learned how to make myself scarce, and learned how to steal when the necessities to live were hard to come by. Nothing came easy as a child; the servants did their best though. After a while my existence could no longer be ignored, my father got worse and started turning to alcohol and violence. I looked more and more like my mother which caused him to get angrier and angrier. I got real good at making myself scarce.
“When I was 2 the king had an affair with a woman, she got pregnant and gave birth to a boy, a fire fey boy, the heir. She kept him a secret until I was eight, it was then that she decided the king had grieved long enough for her to use her son as her ticket to power. The King married her and showered his son with presents affording his new queen anything she wanted as long as she stayed out of his way. She turned her attention to me. She was mad at me for being the King’s true love’s daughter. She tried her best to train me into a true princess using cruel ways. I guess she thought if she made me into some perfect princess model the king would be happy and give her more attention, I don’t think I will ever understand her motives. All I know was that her idea of perfection was painful. Worse than my father’s wrath that’s for sure, I remember having to dance till blood ran onto the dance floor and I collapsed from exhaustion. When I was 13 she died of influenza, the King didn’t even really care.
“Anyway, the prince, had grown up with only his mother, away from palace politics and in the confusion of palace life he turned to me. He is my true younger brother, half-brother or not. I kept him away from my father’s influences and eventually got him sent away to school where he would be free to be his own person. The good person he truly was. In the mean time I put all my energy towards getting myself out. At the age of 14 I had obtained enough skills to run away and not get caught.
“Alone in the city I learned more skills to survive, bought a bar that I now run and picked the pocket of the wrong man resulting in my current job as head of the council guards. All the while I kept an eye on Firium and my brother for the right time to take over.” Lyn finished the story with a sigh and realized with a start that Ryan the big tough guy he was had tears in his eyes, Luke on the other hand was downright bawling his eyes out. He looked like a sad puppy and Lyn had to resist the urge to laugh. It was even funnier because it wasn’t Luke’s first time hearing different parts of the story.
“So… why exactly did you decide to almost get killed now?” Skye ask his eyes shielded and his tone dark.
“Well… um… this is the part that you’re not going to like…” Lyn said cautiously taking a step back, “When Alex said-” There was a chorus of growls around the room.
“You let that b@stard influence you!?” Skye cut in his eyes flashing.
“Um yes?... well you see… he said I was just a commoner and well it kind of got to me… you deserve better than a commoner… besides he was abusing the people and it was time he stepped down!” Lyn said in a hurry backing away as Skye stomped towards her angrily.
“You did this to reclaim some title I don’t even care about!?” Skye screamed at her, backing her against the wall and caging her in with his fist slamming into the wall above her head. Lyn flinched, when he said it that way it did kind of sound bad.
“Um well, yes? And no, it was time for my brother to take over.” Lyn said softly.
“Oh and where is this little prince of yours? And you know what you haven’t explained yet? Who the hell is Damien and why did he send you that love letter? Was he talking about this stupid idea of your in that letter with the phoenix? And why the hell did he know while I was kept in the dark! You’re my soul mate Gwendolyn!” Skye yelled Lyn flinched; yeah he was definitely angry.
“You read that did you?” Lyn asked, “Yes well Damien is-“
“LYN!” The shout was heard across the hall and suddenly all heads turned to the source. There in the doorway stood Damien and he looked just about as pissed as Skye.
“What the hell are you doing to my Lyn?” Damien asked dangerously as he stalked towards Skye, if looks could kill Skye would be six feet under. Feeling the tension rise Ryan immediately stepped into Damien’s way.
“Whoa their buddy, it’s not what it looks like.” Ryan said trying to calm down the fuming Damien.
“Oh? Cause it looks like some jerk is trying to cow my sister into a corner. Now you listen here buddy, my sister deserves more respect than tha-“
“Sister?” Skye asked slowly, tuning out the rest of Damien’s rant. Suddenly things started to make sense. Calmly Skye dropped his hands back to his side and stepped back from Lyn. Lyn felt the absence of heat and her heart sank. She hadn’t minded the close proximity; it wasn’t like she had actually been trapped.
“Damien honey, it’s okay, he was just trying to tell me the same thing you were before. How did you get here? Don’t you have class tomorro-” looking down at her watch Lyn quickly corrected herself, “I mean today?” Lyn asked her voice calm but everyone in the room could hear the slight quiver in her voice and knew she was tired.
“Oh… The school gave me the rest of my classes online so I can come here where I’m needed. I got a taxi over, cost a pretty penny too.” Damien said softly not wanting to upset his sister anymore. She had obviously had a tough day. “No hard feelings man, I’m prince Damien Parker Wisely Wayton,” Damien was soon introduced to everyone and caught up on the events of the day.
“Well that’s about it, now I suspect you need to set a date for your coronation and then we will see from there. You’re going to need a new advisor or two though.” Skye told Damien, he had taken over talking when Lyn had fallen asleep in his lap. Luke and Max were currently asleep cuddling on an opposite couch and Skye was tempted to take pictures while Ryan was standing and looking menacingly at anyone that dared walk into the parlor they were currently residing in.
“Yeah-yawn-I figured. I’ll deal with it all; you guys can stay till I get set up right? Then can u take my sister and make her happy? I don’t want her to spend any more time in this cursed castle then she has to.” Damien told Skye seriously. He knew the place held bad memories for her.
“Yeah I think that’s best, Go to bed we will deal with this mess in the morning.” Skye told the sleepy younger boy. It would be hard for the 16 year old to rule a kingdom but he knew some good advisors that might be happy to help. Sighing Damien said goodnight and Skye picked up a still sleeping Lyn.
“Ryan, go to bed.” He ordered the still alert man,
“What about those two?” Ryan asked gesturing to the still cuddling elite bodyguards.
“Nah, they’ll figure it out.” Skye said with a shrug as he left the room to find an empty room for him and his mate.
