I followed Maya to a Park bench, covered by brush and trees.
She sits down and hugs her knees to her.
I give her a minute then go out into the open by it.
Sitting quietly on the bench, with a good gap between us, I look at her.
"Maya..."
She looks at my, eyes red from her tears, "What do you want?"
I sigh "I'm not good at comforting people, I never have been. Most of the time I make things worse... But Maya, your mom loves you... She really does, it's not hard to tell. I know there's a reason she didn't tell you... And it's not because she meant to hurt you... It's because she wanted to protect you."
"Protect me?! Did she think that by not telling me who my actual dad was, that it would be easier for me? I mean sure. Maybe if the guy I cried over for years hadn't left then it would've been. But he left. He left me, and this whole time I thought he was my dad... Now... I have two dad's who don't even want me..."
Hearing her speak, made my eyes water. "Maya... It's not that Shawn didn't want you... It's that he didn't know... I know Shawn... I know he would've stayed with you... In town at least... Had he known... He wouldn't leave... He would never leave..."
"Why are you taking up for him? HE CHEATED ON YOU!"
"I know... And honestly I don't know why I'm taking up for him, ok? I just know that for the most part, he's a good guy. You're forgetting... He was my high-school love... So I've known him for a while."
She wipes her tears "Its- Why does my life have to be like this? Why can't my life be like Rileys? Perfect, loving, with both parents... I mean even Farkle has both parents..."
"I'm sorry, Farkle?" I say
"Yea, Farkle Minkus." She grins slightly looking down "He's weird."
"Minkus...." I grin "Minkus reproduced?"
She laughs
"Would you at least consider hearing your mom out?..." I ask quietly "She only thought she was doing what was best for you..."
She sighs "I-"
"Even if you don't believe what she has to say, just hear her out"
"Fine." Maya rolls her eyes.
I grin at her, standing up "Let's go then"
