Chapter 18. Day 9.

Day 9.

(Taylor's perspective)

I wake up to someone screaming.

I sit up quickly and look around. I don't see anyone.

The voice screams again louder this time and wakes up Joe.

"What is going on?" Joe asks.

"I don't know. But that person sounds close." I said.

The person stops screaming and we wait for the boom canon to go off but it didn't.

"Huh that's weird." I said.

Suddenly we see dozens of birds flying above us and they look familiar.

Suddenly the birds starts chirping and I hear my fathers screams;

"Taylor!!" I hear my father's voice scream.

"Dad!?" I yell out.

"Taylor! Help me!!!" I hear my father yell.

"Dad?! Where are you?" I yell running off to the sound of his voice.

"Taylor wait don't go!!" Joe yells running after me.

"Dad!?!" I yell out trying to find him.

"Taylor stop!!" Joe yells at me grabbing my arm.

"My dad! I hear him!" I said.

"It's not real! I know these birds. They are jabberjay's. They mimic people's voices. This is part of the games. The game keepers sent them out." Joe said.

Suddenly I hear other tributes yells out to their loved ones being tricked by the birds as well.

"Your father isn't here." Joe said and my heart broke.

"It's an old scare tactic from the Capital to trick the tributes in that where in the games. But then the Capital decided to use it for the war." Joe said.

"I just wished I could say goodbye to him before." I said.

"I know." Joe said.

The birds fly over us screaming my dad and brothers voice over and over.

In frustration I take off my bow and arrow and shoot two arrows at them I hit two in the heart and they fall to the ground.

"Joe!! Joe help!!!"

"Mom!?" Joe yells.

"Joe!! Help me!!!"

"Mom!?!" Joe yells louder.

"Joe! It's the birds. You said that they just copy people voices." I said.

"Yeah but how do you think they got those voices? How do you think they got our families to react that way? They must have been captured by the peacekeepers!" Joe yells in anger.

Suddenly more birds fly above us and dove down to try to bite us, we duck down and start to run. More birds fly down and bite our skin and we scream out in pain. We run away as fast as possible and hide into a small cave.

After an hour of the birds scream out our loved ones voices they finally stopped.

I can still hear my parents and brother scream out my name though. Where did they get that recording? I know the birds record when they are hear when someone who is talking nearby. But how did the birds go to my parents house?? How many of the birds the Capital still use??

"We should keep walking. We don't want someone to find out where we are." Joe said.

"Okay." I said and stood up.
