I had a little freak out being back there. I know we weren't exactly at the caves, but this was close enough. I dropped to my knees, short of breath. Dimitri knelt down beside me, he too felt the pain I was feeling. He was gently rubbing my back, telling me to just breath, along with telling himself that. "Come on, let's get away from here." He dragged me to my feet and away from there. It was all a blur from there, until we reached a little cabin. It took me a minute to figure out where we were. Back when there was a surplus of guardians, we had some stationed at the borders of the warding. They would stay in these little cabins, this just so happened to be the cabin I lost my virginity in...

"Come on." He said quietly as he pulled me inside, like always it was really cold. I sat down on the bed, gently rubbing my hand along the mattress. Then the memories flooded my head, surpassing the bad memories that normally take up residency. Dimitri sat down beside me and pulled me close to him. "The calm before the storm." I said quietly, Dimitri chuckled. "The moment I finally broke, breaking every rule I set myself, and rules set by others." To that I laughed. "The master lost control." He folded his legs and pulled me onto his lap, holding me tight. "You were worth it." He breathed into my hair and kissed the top of my head. "I love you." I said as I tilted my head back to kiss him.

We stayed like that for ages, living in the memory of the moments we shared together. The moments before our lives as we knew it would be ripped to pieces, and from that point, never be the same again. "We should probably head back." He broke the silence, giving me a fright. It was so calm and quiet out here. "I know." I groaned, but I really didn't want to. He lifted me up effortlessly from his lap and placed me on my feet. I could never get over how strong he is. He gracefully stood up then grabbed my hand, we walked out of the little cabin... only to be faced by a wolf. We froze where we were, animals have never liked dhampirs. It growled at us as it laid down on the ground, it didn't look very well. Then I seen what it was protecting... Two pups.

I gasped as I slowly knelt down in front of the mama wolf. Upon closer inspection, she was hurt and bleeding pretty bad. We don't often see much in terms of larger wildlife out here, but wolves were more frequent than other animals. I went to reach towards her but Dimitri stopped me. "Rose, don't." He said sternly but quietly. "She's hurt." I said sadly. "Rose, if you try anything she'll attack. She'll do anything to protect her pups." I sighed again, I felt so sorry for her. "What can we do?" There was desperation in my voice. "Nothing." He said simply, Dimitri is far more caring than me, but he knew all to well she was too far gone. "Well, I'm gonna stay with her till she goes. We can't just leave the pups here." Dimitri sighed as he knelt down beside me.

"What are we going to do with them, Rose? They're baby wolves, which means they will grow into wolves. You can't keep them, besides animals hate Dhampirs." I didn't want to hear it, I didn't want to abandon them. "She's not freaking out like other animals do, especially seeing as she is injured and vulnerable. Maybe... maybe we come across as different after what we've been through. Could you grab a blanket from the cabin?" I was determined to do my best for her. He stopped questioning and just went along with it. While he stepped away, I tried to earn some trust. I slowly extended my hand towards her, letting her smell me, to show her I wasn't a threat. She kept frantically looking at her pups, then at me. I knew what she wanted, she wanted them looked after... she knew she was going to die.

I left my hand just in front of her face, completely banking on the hope that she wouldn't attack me. Then... she licked me. She then turned back and pulled her pups closer to me, then edged herself forward, resting her head on my knee. I sat there in bewilderment. Dimitri then returned with the blanket. I gently draped it over her and the pups, then we sat quietly and waited. It was obvious that she was quickly fading away. I sat there gently patting her head, right up until her last breath. Then... she was gone. I could feel a couple of tears escape down my cheeks, Dimitri rubbed my back, trying to comfort me. "I wonder what happened to her." I said sadly. "Most likely another animal." Dimitri said sadly. "Is there anyway we can bury her?" I looked pleadingly at him. He gave a small nod then disappeared, only to return with a shovel.
