Today is Kara's funeral, Lee thinks I should stay home but I told him no. I have a right to go to this funeral, after all, she was my best friend. I stand in the mirror and look at myself in the ripped black jeans and a black floral shirt I'm wearing. Kara once said to me that when she dies, she doesn't want me to look fancy, she wants me to be myself. So I'm wearing an outfit that is basically something I would wear to a shitty party. At least the shirt is nice. I walk out of my room, grabbing my phone and sticking it into my back pocket. I walk out the front door and pull my keys from my pocket, getting in my car. Lee and AJ are already there so I have to meet them.

I close my door and start the car, driving to the cemetery. Once I arrive, I see Lee rush to help me out of the car and take me to where everyone is gathering. He takes my hand and I close my door, walking with him to where Kara's family is standing on one side and the other side is friends from school. I stand on the side with family as Lee stands on the side with friends, tilting his head at me. I'm a family. "Good morning, we are gathered here today to mourn at the loss of a young girl named Kara Jean Tison." The man says upfront. "Kara was talented, smart, and beautiful according to friends and family." He says, looking down at his book. "Before we pray for Kara, we have a few of Kara's closest friends and family who would like to speak." He says, looking at me.

I take a deep breath before walking up to the stand. "Hello everyone, my name is Maisie Quinn. I was Kara's best friend and practically sister but she didn't ever claim me as her sister." I chuckle, making a few others smile. "Kara was my best friend since kindergarten, we had our days where we would fight or disagree on some stupid things but, we always made up and returned to ourselves," I say. "I made Kara a promise a really long time ago that when she died I would be the only one looking like shit because I would be the one crying the most at her funeral." I chuckle to myself. I wipe a tear away off my cheek and continue, "I never knew how much love a person could give until I met Kara, She was always the highlight of my day and night of course. I always imagined that Kara and I would grow old together and we would have children who were best friends." I sniffle. "The one thing I didn't know is that she would die so soon with her whole life ahead of her. Kara was the most innocent girl I had ever met and now that she's gone I have no one to share movie nights with or go shopping with." I say through tears.

"Kara, I made you a promise that I would always protect you. I failed you, Kara, I failed your family and friends." Lee walks up beside me and wraps his arm around my side. "I didn't want you to get hurt, I never planned for you to get hurt in your beautiful life, Kara," I exclaim. "You promised me that you would stay by my side. You promised me that I would live with you for eternity and beyond infinity." "This is where we are now, the week before you were supposed to graduate and go to your dream college in Boston. But we're not there, we're at a funeral for a talented, young, and amazing girl who was my best friend for thirteen years." I wipe some tears away. "I loved you, Kara. I was jealous of you, and how you could get any guy just by walking down a hallway." I say. "I don't want you to leave, please don't leave me," I say. Lee guides me off the stand and he walks me to the car where I sob into his chest.

I look up, trying to catch my breath. "Hey hey, it's alright Maisie," Lee whispers to me. I move him away, fixing my hair while looking in the mirror of the car. I turn back to look at people who are gathered and everyone starts leaving. I start walking and the pastor tries to stop me, saying the gathering was over but I just shoved him out of my way. I sit on my knees next to Kara's casket, folding my hands in front of my face. "Dear Lord, please bring her back to me. She didn't deserve this, I did. I was a selfish friend and I left her alone when I could've been at her side." I say, praying. "Please God, help me and bring Kara back to me," I say. "Amen." I stand and walk to the car, pulling my keys from my pocket and tossing them to Lee. "Where are you going?" He asks me as I walk past him.

"Drive yourself home, I'm walking," I say, leaving him and the funeral behind. — About fifteen minutes later I stop at a gas station, the bell jingling on the door as I enter. I walk down an aisle and grab a candy bar and water. I walk to the counter, slamming my stuff down on the counter where the cashier was reading a magazine. He looks up, standing off his seat and scanning my items. "That'll be two thirty-four." He says. I pull money from my wallet, handing him the exact amount. "Have a great day." He says, handing me my candy bar and water. I start to walk before turning and facing him, "Fuck you." His smile fades into a confused yet sad look. I walk outside and start walking back home eventually reaching it in less than ten minutes. I walk up to the front door, opening it and walking inside. Lee stands from the couch along with AJ. I take my coat off and grab my candy and water, walking past them to my room as I slam the door and lock it.

"Just give her some time." I hear Lee say to AJ outside of the door. I hear them walk away and I sit in the desk chair, looking out the window. It's over. My life is over. Goodbye Kara.
