[Maisie Pov]

Jessie invited me to go out to eat tonight at some fancy restaurant downtown. She told me to dress casual yet elegant. So, I've been sitting in my closet for two hours now doing nothing. All I have been doing is lying on the floor, and staring at the hangers of clothes. "Why do you hate me, god!?" I yell, standing off the floor and digging through more clothes. "Maisie? Is everything okay?" I hear a voice down the hall ask while the door closes.

"Huh? Uh, yeah everything is great!" I say, rushing to close my bedroom door. I lock it and run into my closet, pulling a grey dress from a hanger and I grab black heels. Running to the bathroom, I slam the door behind me and change quickly before brushing my hair and tossing it into a messy bun. I eventually get out of the bathroom and grab my jacket and my phone, walking out of my room.

I get down the hallway and look to where Jessie is standing in a light yellow dress with matching heels. "You look amazing," I tell her. She smiles, "right back atcha." Jessie opens the front door and motions for me to go first which I do. We get outside to her car and get inside, the car filled with heat. "Ready?" She asks, starting the car. I nod as she pulls out of the driveway.

Jessie and I drive in silence for a while before she breaks it, "so, you never really explained the story of your friend Kara." I look out the window, tapping my foot quietly against the mat. Jessie looks at me intently, most likely waiting for a story. "You don't have to tell me, I was just curious about who she was." She exclaims. "I grew up with Kara," I say. "I always thought she would have a better life than what God gave her," I exclaim.

Jessie grips my hand on the center council and gives me a wide smile before letting go. "I'm sorry about her passing," Jessie says to me. I shrug, staring out the window again. Eventually, we pull into the parking lot of an elegant restaurant and Jessie parks the car. "Jessie, this place is fancy," I say, sitting up in my seat. "My uncle owns it, he used to take us here when we were kids." She says, hopping out of the front seat.

I get out of the car and walk to the front door where Jessie is, typing on her phone. "Who are you texting?" I ask, peeking over her arm. She shows me her phone screen and it looks like she's reading a book. "It's an app called Wattpad, I found it two weeks ago and I have read over sixty stories." She snorts. "Wow, it seems like a very popular app," I say, turning the page on her phone. She locks her phone before opening the front door for me.

We walk inside and Jessie walks up to the front desk. "Reservation for Jessie Phillis." She says, holding her bag in her hands. "Right this way." The lady says, grabbing two menus and walking us to a booth for two. Jessie and I sit down, opening our menus to reveal food that is way more than I can afford. "Jessie..this is really expensive," I say to her. She chuckles, "don't worry, I've got it covered."

I run my finger down the menu, looking through my options for meals and trust me, all of it sounds good. "Good evening ladies, my name is Kirsten and I will be your server for tonight." Our waitress says, setting down silverware beside our menus. "What can I get you, ladies, to drink?" Kirsten asks, her notepad ready in hand. "We'll have a bottle of champagne." Jessie cuts in.

She smiles at me before Kirsten starts speaking again, "alright that will be out for you ladies in a moment." She says, smiling before wandering off. "So, your family is basically rich," I say, not saying it is a question. "Well, I wouldn't say rich I would just say, overly powered in cash?" She says, shrugging. "Why didn't you tell me you were?" I ask, folding my hands on the table.

"Because Maisie, I didn't want you to become my friend just for my money." She says, tapping her fingers on the table. "Pfft! I would still be your friend even if you didn't have money, I like you as my friend." I say, smiling at her. I've realized this is one of the first times I've been smiling since Kara's passing. It's been a while since I've gone to see her and I'm really regretting thinking about it.

"Hey, you sorta spaced out there for a second," Jessie says, waving a hand in my face. "Yeah, sorry I completely blanked," I say, looking down to where my food is. The night passes with Jessie and me talking and eating together. After a while, eventually making it back to my house and I say goodbye to Jessie and head inside. "Thanks again, Jessie!" I yell before she gets into her car.

She waves and pulls out of the driveway. I walk inside and turn on the lights but they don't flick-on. I pull out my phone and shine a small light, walking to the kitchen. I get to the knife holder and pull the largest one out. "I wouldn't go there, Maisie." I hear a voice say before the lights turn on. I look over and see Lee standing by the light switch, laughing.

"I got you so good!" He says, catching his breath. I set the knife down and walk over, smacking him. "What is wrong with you?" I yell, continuously hitting him. "Awe comes on, it was funny." He says, wrapping his arms around my shoulders. "It wasn't you jackass," I say, smacking his face before walking away.

Oh happy days.
