You enter the burrow and promptly realize that you have no fucking idea of what you were thinking.
Amaterasu is carefully dormant, an ever-useless presence within you. You wonder if her being a sun goddess makes you immune to fire. No better place to find out, right?
You cover your mouth with a hand, forcing short breaths to keep the smoke out. Gray heat pools menacingly at the ceiling of the cave as you crawl through the ashen underbrush that was probably serving as a low-tier carpet. You call out over the low roar of the flames: "Hello? I'm here to help. Please make noise if you can hear me!"
Silence. You wait.
A high keen of pain comes from the very back of the cave. You head that way.
There are four pups, just as the wolf outside had said, and they're cowed in the curve of a wolf's side, shaking and pushing at her.
Your heart drops. Is she dead?A burning tree branch cracks in two from your left and falls to the ground with a mighty, heaving groan. The sound is followed by a sharp yelp and you move to that instead, figuring that whatever or whoever it is can help you carry the stragglers.
You have to use both hands to move the trunk and you grit your teeth, tasting smoke in ashen lungfuls.
You talk to yourself, gathering determination in your hands like water and freezing it into ice with every word. "Come on Ishikawa, people are counting on you-" You shove the trunk aside and find the omega of the pack, looking tired but injured only with a broken leg. "This is no place to die, just - give a little more - effort!" You heave the dog into your arms and she goes easily - you say, "It's gonna be okay. Can you help me?" and lower her down by the pups. She grabs two gently in her teeth and limps towards the exit. You nod, ensuring her escape, before you lift the mother over your shoulders like an injured lamb, take the remaining pups into your free arm, and head for the light outside.
Smoke swamps the cave and hits your lungs in toxic waves - you're drowning but you can still suck in mouthful after mouthful of air. You choke up, pressing onward, but the brush beneath you has caught fire and you're stuck battling the blistering skin on your shins as well as the air-broiling heat that presses heavy on all sides of you.
You keep moving, hopeful that the tunnel opens out into the afternoon again, but there seems to be no end in sight. Is this thing getting longer?
You call, "Chihiro-!" and erupt into coughing. "K-Koga! Can you-" The back of your throat feels like you've swallowed scrap metal. "Can you hear me?"
There's no response. To be expected, you guess, considering the roar of the flames around you.
You manage to find sunlight up ahead and your crawl turns into a four-legged sprint. "Come on Ishikawa, just a few more yards. A few more," you repeat, hoping to rekindle your adrenaline.
"A few more-" CRACK. Something wooden comes down sharp in your ribs, plunging hot and jagged in your skin. A piercing pain erupts in your chest and you gasp, your hold on the dogs slackening.
You manage one last confused thought, just before your vision swamps with black: Was that my heart?
