You start to fall into a routine - Chihiro comes to wake you up every morning at exactly the asscrack of dawn and takes you to community breakfast. You eat, excuse yourself, and let Chihiro guide you to morning training (Koga's idea). You've become quite proficient with a staff - you can best Koga in a sparring match now.

Many days have passed. Chihiro says it's been a month since she met you. You wonder of your brother and how he's doing, but you haven't heard any whereabouts of Kagome and she probably won't be visiting the mountain anytime soon.

After training it's lunch, and after that is a sparring match and then conditioning. And then...

"Whew," you say, taking a swig of the water Kimiko brought for you. You've just finished your afternoon run. "Finally done for the day."

Kimiko smiles her gap-toothed smile at you and you fawn over her natural cuteness for a moment before Koga interrupts.
"Arinaga!" You turn. Koga stands at the edge of the training grounds, looking very exerted. Sweat plasters the hair at his temples to his face and his complexion is flushed.

You find yourself hot under the collar and it isn't the mid-afternoon heat. Damn.

"Kagome's been seen a few towns over. Wanna make a quick run and go see her?"

The two of you arrive in town that evening. Kagome nearly screams when she sees you.

"Arinaga!" Okay, so she actually screams. Koga winces. "You're okay!"

She throws her arms around your neck and you reciprocate, rocking back and forth with her excited jumping.
"Yeah," you say, "Koga's given me a place in his tribe. I'm grateful."

Koga shoves you after you've let go of Kagome. "Piss up a rope, Arinaga, you know I would've done it anyway."

Kagome laughs as you shove him back - he stumbles a half-step and Inuyasha calls him on it.
"Hey Pedigree, you become weaker than a human or somethin'? Lame."

Koga snaps, "You try holdin' still when she pushes you, jackass! She's stronger than she looks!"

Your face warms. Inuyasha, never one to turn down a challenge, tells you to push him over.

You gather all of your force behind your shoulders and shove him - his heel gets caught in the crook of his ankle and he falls flat on his ass.

You hear Miroku's gasp and Sango's barely-held "Mph-!" of giggling.

Kagome says, "Oh," and Koga bursts into loud, rowdy laughter.

"Holy hell, Inuyasha! Weaker than a human, huh?"

You stay the night with Kagome's crew in town - Koga stays too, he just disappears for a while before you see him again after dark.

Kagome nudges your arm in the present, looking mischievous. The two of you sit near the fire that Shippo had craftily made with his fox-fire.

"Sooooooo," she says, and you feel trepidation rise in you. "You and Koga, huh?"

Ah. There it is.
"We're not... like that," you say, trying to keep your head.

She nods. "Mmmhm."

"What? We're not!"

Kagome holds her hands up in surrender. "Whatever you say, sister."

You laugh, "Dude!"

"What? It's obvious that you want him!"

That gives you pause. Is it that obvious? "Please keep in mind that it's you that he wants to marry."

"So he hasn't proposed yet?"

Sango pipes in, "It seems like he would've by now. Strange."

"No! What is wrong with this Era?"

Kagome sighs. "I'm not saying that I agree with how they do things. I just think that he likes you too."

"Who likes who too?" It's Koga's voice, right in your left ear. You reflexively throw your hand back and accidentally smack him in the nose. Pain snaps along your knuckles and you look up at Koga, an apology already in the making, but stop in surprise when you see that his nose is bleeding.
Kagome cries, "Oh my God, Arinaga!"

You apologize profusely, offering to help him clean up.

"Sorry," you say as you blot the blood away with a wet cloth. He laughs and you feel warmth flood to your face in embarrassment. The two of you sit on the shore of the creek near the village, basking in the warm summer night as you clean blood off of Koga's handsome face.

"It's fine, I just didn't expect to take a fist to the face for askin' a question." He sits patiently with his eyes closed as you smear red across his cheek by accident. You wipe it off. "So what got you all wound up, Arinaga?"

Your hand stops and he opens his eyes to look down at you curiously.

"You know Kagome," you say, in lieu of a real answer, "She's too good at riling me up."

You laugh, nervous. Koga, naïve as ever, frowns.
"But what were the two of you sayin' before I got there? Somethin' about someone liking someone... seemed kinda serious."

You shake your head. "I dunno, man. I've honestly forgotten now."

Your slang catches him off-guard. "Man...?"

You polish the top lip of his chest-guard to shining and get to your feet, dusting off your legs where sand sticks. You offer him a hand and Koga, baffled, takes it.

The two of you stand there for several moments.

Finally, he says, "So you're really not gonna tell me."

You shake your head. He lifts a hand and ruffles your short, curling hair, messing up whatever order you had it in. You huff.
"Hey!" Before you can think, you've shoved him over and into the water.

He stands up to his ankles and stares at you open-mouthed. Then his expression settles into something devious, and you realize that he has plans to mess with you somehow.
You hold up a hand to stop him, but he's already in motion, running at you with his arms outstretched.

"Oh, no," you say, halfway to laughter, "No, Koga-"

He's almost to you when you turn tail and sprint back towards camp.
He calls, "Hey, no fair! Arinaga!"

You can't help yourself. "Sucks to suck!"

You can hear the telltale start-up of Koga's whirlwind and double your pace, taking full strides in an attempt to get away from him. You dart left, behind a noodle shop, and his personal tornado swings wide to try to follow and fails. You can hear his shocked yell as he practically throws himself back into the water, this time full-body. You laugh as you make your way to camp, ignoring Miroku's startled gasp as you tumble past him and into the shack where Kagome waits.
"Whoa, Arinaga!"

Sango waves you over and you sit down next to her.

She asks, "Why the rush?" and you laugh breathlessly.

"I got Koga's fur wet," you say, rolling your eyes.

Sango stares at you. Kagome laughs, sounding baffled.

"Wh-what?"

Koga stomps in, soaked from head to toe, and you hold back laughter.

"You'll pay for that," says Koga, but you know he's not serious about it from the way that he tries to fight his smile back.

You fall asleep that night thinking of the way that Koga's canines look when he smiles and the earthy, herbal scent that you get from him when you stand close to him.
