Koga asks, "What's a couch?" and you see that it's definitely not a couch.

It looks like two futons laid to resemble a couch, which is just disappointing. You shake your head.
"Never mind."

"Lay her down over there, Chihiro," he tells her, and you wonder if the two have gotten buddy-buddy in your absence when Chihiro merely nods and directs you over to the futons. You sit.

You swallow dryly. "I don't wanna lie down. I just got up from lying down. I wanna go sit in the sun or something." Your voice raises in panic unknowingly at the aspect of being in such a claustrophobic space. "You're gonna leave me here in this dank-ass cave all by myself to vegetate on this fucking futon?"

"You won't be alone. Koga and I will be guarding the door." Chihiro's tone makes it clear that she doesn't see a downside to the situation.
"I don't wanna do that, that's stupid-" Hands cup your face and you quiet. Koga. You didn't even see him move. He's squatting in front of you, his clothes leaving little to your already rampant imagination.
Keep that under wraps, you stupid fucking dumbass! He likes Kagome! KA. GO. ME. And even if he liked you, he wouldn't like YOU. He'd like Amaterasu. You know, the dormant goddess inside of you? They "know each other," and you know what that fucking means.

Since when was the voice in your head so mean? You don't know where all of this self-hate is coming from, but it's bumming you out.

You're a good person. You know that. Koga has preferences. You also know that. You don't know where you're going with this. Hey! Zone back in now.

"Just for a few hours, okay?" His blue eyes are dizzying. His gaze holds so much expectation that you wilt under it. "We wanna make sure everything's on the up an' up before we let you go 'sit in the sun or somethin'. How about this: I'll stay in here with you. Chihiro," he adds, and she perks intently, "Can you handle guard duty by yourself?"

She nods. Koga smiles.
"You're the best! We won't be in here any longer than we need to, I promise."

He hasn't stopped holding your face. You blame your traitorous human pack-bonding endorphins or your danger-bonding endorphins or whatever the fuck they're called for not pulling away yet. You do quite the opposite; Koga's bright eyes widen when you lean forward and lay your temple on the top lip of his armor.

"Hang on a sec," he says, and you pull away.

"Sorr-"

He cuts you off. "Don't be. Just gotta help you get more comfy! Gimme a sec."

He reaches up to his left shoulder and proceeds to basically give you a top-half strip tease, eye contact and all. He must think you're a freak-

He grins, all pointed wolf teeth and boyish confidence. "See somethin' you like?"

You drown. Is that possible? Drowning in air? No - you gasped so abruptly when he asked the question that you choked on your own spit. You go down in a fit of coughing and his smile falls.
"Arinaga? What-"

His chestplate clatters to the floor and you're thankful that you turn away to cough into the crook of your elbow, because you're pretty sure that the sight of Koga at that moment would've made you shit glitter or something.

"Fine," you manage, and cringe at the gravel in your voice, "I'm fine. I just - kind of need water."

Koga calls for water and a young wolf girl comes with a flask made of animal hide a moment later.
She respectfully bows and hands it to you. You wave her off.

"No need to do that for me," you tell her, feeling more plain than ever, "Thank you for the water, though."

Koga blinks at the exchange. When the girl comes out of her bow to meet your gaze, you see that she has two differently colored eyes - one brown, one blue. She has a few beauty marks, you notice. Her face is soft and round; she can't be older than eight, you think. Her dark hair is cut short into a bob and parted in the middle, and it's only when she tucks her bangs behind her ears that you notice the bruises.

Koga's brow furrows when you react candidly with a small gasp.

Worriedly, quietly, he says, "Kimiko, who did this to you?"

She gives her head a half-shake before she begins to cry. Koga's expression only gets more worried, but he doesn't quite look like he knows what to do. Sure, he handled you well on the other mountain, but you clung to him. Kimiko isn't going to push herself into his arms for comfort like you did.

You frown at your mental wording. I'm such a bully to myself.

Kimiko starts to blubber through her tears: "Th-the mean mean boys! They're always callin' me Alien Eyes and ugly and weak and pushin' me aroun' and I-I thought I could handle it and be strong like Big Brother Koga, but it... it hurts a lot, and I-!" She sniffles, looking right at you with those round eyes. Your heart literally breaks, you think. It must be in pieces in the aftermath of that one pleading look.

You reach out and lay a hand on her arm, smoothing your fingers across the skin there. You have no fucking idea of what you're doing, but it's gotten her attention and you can't stop now.

"Kimiko," you say, and she wipes at her eyes. "You're the most beautiful little girl I've ever seen. Those boys are mean because they must think so, but they know that if you thought so too, then you'd be too strong! Confident girls can do anything, did you know that? You're gorgeous, Kimiko. And smart, and brave, and kind, for trying to keep Big Brother Koga from worrying. I'm sure he appreciates it very much."

More tears well up. You'd expected this, kind of. You open your arms and pat your lap.

"Would you like to sit with us, Kimiko?"

Koga's mouth opens, but her scrawny frame is already in your lap and her head is on your shoulder.

"Thank you, miss," she says, and you tell her your name.

"Arinaga Ishikawa," she repeats, sounding awed, and you smile. She says delightedly, "Big Sister Ari!" and Koga snorts.
"I'm your sibling here, squirt. No one else. I'm not sharin' you with Arinaga here, angel-faced or not."

Is he flirting? He reaches over and cards a hand through Kimiko's messy hair.

"Aw, mkay," Kimiko says compliantly, and you smack Koga on the arm.

"Kimiko can have as many siblings as she wants, Big Brother Koga," you tell him, and he laughs, bright as bells.

You move to lean against the wall, your left arm touching Koga's and Kimiko sprawled out across your laps. You talk to Koga for what feels like hours. You're in the process of explaining what a microwave does when his head falls onto your shoulder. Looking down, you see that Kimiko is also asleep.

You laugh, feeling more comfortable than you have in awhile.

Maybe there's something to be had here after all.
