OK so I just found this COMPLETELY AMAZING kotlc theory on tumblr. All credit goes to sophies-earbuds

*FLASHBACK SPOILER WARNING*

I was thinking a bit about Sophie's genetics and her biological parents, and who they may be, when I remembered something about the Forkle's pasts. They studied genetics for years, trying to find out whether there was any scientific proof that twins really are inferior to single birth children. And I was thinking that the Forkle twins are literal genetic geniuses, so what if when they sparked Sophie's life, they sparked another along with her?

Hear me out on this, because it takes a bit of explaining. I think that Sophie has a secret twin, because at the time of her experimentation, the Forkle twins were incredibly focused on the injustice toward twins. But here's the crazy part: one of the embryos was frozen. So, one twin is older than the other.

There is another Sophie out there, with blonde hair and blue eyes, and one ability. This twin wasn't experimented on, and was implanted as a control group of sorts, to see how this child would grow up, what she would look like, etc... Now, we all know that embryos can be frozen for years at a time, I just read an article about a woman giving birth to an embryo that had been frozen for twenty-four years, so this second twin can be preserved for a very long time. But what if Sophie is the second twin? What if Sophie's embryo was the one that was frozen? Because, wouldn't Sophie notice if there was another kid at Foxfire who looked exactly like her? If they were the same age, wouldn't this other twin notice that Sophie is behind all of the horrible things happening in their world? Wouldn't she have approached Sophie after attending her funeral?

I think not. Because I think that Sophie is the younger twin. And who do we know that looks so much like Sophie, her parents almost cancelled her adoption?

That's right. Jolie. The same Jolie that was scouted by the Black Swan relentlessly, and the same Jolie that was killed by a member of the Neverseen who had an infatuation with Sophie from the first moment he met her. He kidnapped Sophie and asked what she was for, what things the Black Swan were hiding in her brain. What if Brant had kidnapped her because he knew about her relation to Jolie through the Black Swan? He may not have known that Sophie and Jolie are twins, but he would have known that both girls look alike, and are associated with the Black Swan.

We don't know the specifics of Jolie's birth, so that leaves a lot of things open. What if Grady and Edaline couldn't get pregnant? So they asked a physician to help. A physician like Forkle? We know that Forkle posed as a fertility doctor for Sophie's human parents, so what's to say that it wasn't his first time? What if he'd done it for Grady and Edaline too?

It is always so emphasized how similar Sophie and Jolie look, and the resemblance must be so uncanny, because it was enough for Grady and Edaline to literally cancel her adoption. It also can't be much of a coincidence that Grady and Edaline were chosen as her guardians, because they already were so involved with the Black Swan/Neverseen, both through Jolie and Grady, not to mention that Julline, Edaline's sister, is literally in the collective. The entire family is involved with the Black Swan.

There was a two year gap between Jolie's death and Sophie's inception/birth. Jolie died sixteen years ago, as of the first Keeper book, and Sophie turned fourteen in that book as well (which we actually didn't know until the fourth, but Sophie says that she turns thirteen while she was hostage, so we can only assume that she was actually already closer to fourteen). So, in those two years, the Black Swan must have buckled down on Project Moonlark, because that's when a lot of the important stuff happened. They must have realised that this battle was so much more than injustice toward multiple births after Jolie was killed, because they knew that Jolie was a double agent, and that she had to have been killed off for a reason. They recruited Livvy to the Black Swan to be a part of the project, and with the timeline of this theory, they would have probably started rushing the project, because why would they freeze an embryo for eighteen years, but then suddenly two years after Jolie dies, they go along with their plan? It makes sense that Sophie's inception would have to do with Jolie's, because they would be twins.

But imagine the effect this news would have on everyone. This would make Grady and Edaline Sophie's genetic parents, Dex would be her genetic cousin, and she would be related to a member of the collective (not that Forkle doesn't count, but we're talking genetics here).

Moving on from the theory part of this, just imagine what the reaction would be to the news? Forkle would tell Sophie that she has a twin, very reluctantly, and Sophie would probably start freaking out. Wondering where she is, if she's with humans, if she has tweaked genes as well. She'd worry that she's in danger with the Neverseen or the Lodestar Initiative. But then she gets the really heartbreaking news: her twin sister is already dead. She'd feel like she lost a part of herself that she's only known for a few seconds, and when she asks who it is, that's when everything really starts breaking down.

Sophie would stare at pictures of Jolie for days, months before she really starts to feel the loss. She'd start going through all of Jolie's things again, really getting to know her this time, wanting to know what kinds of things they had in common, if anything at all. She might keep a few things, things that would help her feel closer to her newfound deceased twin sister. She'd feel a little bit closer to Grady and Edaline knowing that they've all felt the loss, albeit in different ways and at different times.

Dex would also be incredibly supportive, especially now that he and Sophie are connected in an even closer way. It would feel like everything has changed, while nothing has really changed at all. In fact, it would motivate Sophie to fight even harder, knowing that her twin sister was killed at the hands of a member of the Neverseen member. The same that tried to kill her.

This theory makes a lot of sense to both my friend and I, and I don't know if it will actually be true, but I kind of hope it will, because I just can't get over the fact that Jolie and Sophie look so much alike. So, accept my theory or don't, but I firmly believe in this. Thanks for reading my ramblings this far.
