Seconds turned into minutes.
Minutes into hours.
Hours into days.
Days into weeks.
And weeks into months.
And Finn felt like he was trapped.
8 months he had been here.
He wanted out of here. He was miserable the whole time.
The only time anything was bearable was when he saw her, Beatrice.
Somehow, without even knowing she was doing it, Beatrice lit up the room.
But Finn knew that she was afraid.
She was afraid of being happy.
She was scared of letting go.
Finn tried to help but he knew he couldn't
Beatrice had been here for so long, and she still wasn't able to be happy.
It was like she had forgotten what happy was.
And it was killing him.
They may have been afraid but Finn wanted to laugh with her and make her smile.
But he couldn't.
He was helpless.
And it hurt.
The only time he saw her was during meals and group therapy sessions.
It wasn't enough.
He missed her greatly.
Just from their few talks, Finn felt like he's known her forever.
But he needed to see her more.
It was after dinner and Finn was sitting in his room. His roommates, Eric and Harry, were already sleeping. Finn got up and walked to his door.
They thankfully didn't lock the doors.
Finn snuck out.
He had to see her.
He rounded the corner, staying low the whole time. He looked to the left then stood up and turned right, only to slam into someone.
Finn was knocked onto his butt.
"Oh my god!" a girl whisper-shouted.
Finn opened his eyes and saw two people, one boy, one girl. They were holding hands and the girl was positioned a little behind the guy.
"Oh shoot, man. I'm sorry." The boy said. He held out a hand and Finn took it. He pulled him up.
"I'm Tanner by the way, and this is Bre." Tanner said.
"Finn." He said. "Are you sneaking out?"
They nodded, "Yep."
Finn smiled.
"I take it you're doing the same thing?"
Finn nodded, "I need to see... someone..."
Tanner flashed him a big goofy grin full of white pearly teeth. It complemented his golden blond hair and the look was finished with his piercing blue eyes.
"Yeah, I understand the feeling." He said. "I wish you the best of luck."
And with one last smile, Tanner and his girlfriend were gone.
Finn continued on, just down the corridor.
He stood outside her door, thinking about how he should wake her, when suddenly, he heard shuffling from inside her room.
Finn stood there, frozen from shock. He should have moved but he couldn't.
The door creaked open.
Finn stared at her, Beatrice.
"Finn? What are you doing?"
"I-I needed to see you..."
Even through the dim light, Finn could see her smile.
She stepped closer. She grabbed Finn's wrist and ran her thumb over his forearm.
Finn watched her, silently.
Solemnly.
Her brow furrowed, like she was thinking about something that saddened her.
Finn didn't want that.
"C'mon," he said. "I want to show you something."
She looked up at him and nodded.
He took her hand and started down the hall.
He didn't think of taking her here until the last minute.
He brought her outside, to the courtyard. They laid down on the grass and watched the stars.
"I'm envious." She started.
Finn turned on his side to watch her.
She continued, "I'm envious of people with unscathed forearms. I'm envious of people who have everything. I'm envious of people who can live their life like it's the best gift ever given to them."
"I'm envious of people who are happy."
"I'm envious of you."
