Jim POV
It was dark. Blacker than night. The kind of emptiness that consumes you to your core.
It was then that I felt a sharp pain in my head. I could feel it's singeing touch but, couldn't grasp it. Then the pain grew expanding through my vains and down my neck.
By this time, my body felt aflame. My mind, in and out of consciousness. I reached out, looking for some kind of relief.
Then it hit me, like water dousing out fire. A cool rush.
A shiver ran up my spine.
'Who am I?'

Claire POV
"You useless piece of crap!!!" I screamed. James shrunk back.
"We've lost them," I stated with an angry edge.
"No we haven't...," he said unsure of himself.
I gave him a long and hard glare. Clenching my fists and biting my tongue, I made for the next step.
Then an ear piercing roar cried out to my right.
I stopped in my tracks.
'What was that?'
Then I heard it again, a pained roar full of hate and anguish.
I bolted.
Running into the woods knife drawn, silently holding my breath. Not too far behind me I could feel james' presence. I mentally rolled my eyes.
I came to a clearing and waited for movement.
In the shadows of the sunset I saw something shift. My hand gripped the hilt of my blade tighter and fear was scraping at the edges of my mind. With sweat rolling down my back, I took a step forward.
I barely heard it. The almost silent crack of a twig.
I turned on my heel and ran.
A glimpse was all I got as a heap of darkness ran into the woods, a cloak billowing behind the middle.
Then, it was gone.

It wasn't long after I discovered its abandoned campsite.
I found a black liquid in the corner of the fire. A trail leading over to a puddle, where the black goop congregated.
"Hold on you stupid numbskull."

Steve POV
I woke with a start. Groaning as I sat up from the grass.
'Stupid Jim and getting up at the freaking crack of dawn'
"They're onto us." Jim stated. I saw him crouching in the shadows. I still couldn't understand why he still stayed in the dark. I mean, he got a cool rock and can come out in the sun. He does. Just, avoids it?
"Jim, how can you tell? Based on my knowledge of tracking, even if they are following us, they're at least a day or two's trek from this point." Eli said, pushing up his glasses.
"I know how Claire operates, and the wind is blowing from the direction they're coming from, they are around 15 minutes away. I can smell it."
"How? Didn't we leave before them," I said.
"I have no clue what method they're using to gain land but they are gaining it so we should keep moving," Jim said.

Line break (time skip of 3 hours later)

"GOD DAMN IT JIM!" I yelled.
"What now?" He muttered.
"I think I'm dying. My feet, they have lost all feeling. ELI! AM I DYING?!!!" I gripped his shoulders, and shook him as I screamed in his face.
"We should rest for a bit, something tells me they've stopped to rest." Jim grumbled out. I instantly dropped to the ground.
"Man..... I'm beat," Toby gasped out in ragged breaths.
"You said it," Eli agreed, and plopped down next to me.
"I'm going to do some surveillance, stay here," he said, dead serious.
And he was gone.
