"Hi." She was breathless as she looked up at him, whimpering the simple phrase out.
He smiled in a nostalgic way. "Hi, Teru." He grabbed onto the strap of his leather bag, pulling it farther onto his shoulder.
They started at each other, not knowing what to make of the other's presence. What was there to say? It had been years.
He opened his mouth, his delicate, pale red lips inviting, but she stayed still, only looking. His mouth hung open a moment longer before he spoke. "The ring?"
She suddenly looked down at her left hand, having forgotten it was there. She pulled the hand to her chest, grasping at the necklace chain exposed above her shirt collar. She averted her eyes from him. "Yeah."
She bit her lip, losing the fight for control and looking up at him. Oh god, those gorgeously deep green eyes. The lines under them, the smile lines and the creases in his forehead. The stubble on his chin. He was older, but to her, he was just as beautiful as he had been.
So many words rushed through her mind. Every single thing she'd wanted to say to him since the day he left spun in her head and made her dizzy. But she resisted. For now, seeing him was enough.
Still, she ought to say something.
"I missed you."
Akira averted his gaze this time, digging his free hand into his jacket pocket. "...I know." There was this aching, heartbroken feeling dripping from his words, and they dug their lovely little needles straight into her heart. She could feel the pain in her chest over losing him.
But how can you lose something you never really had?
"We weren't healthy, you know." Neither looked at the other. Of course Akira had spoken first. He was always braver.
"...Yeah." Her voice cracked.
"I did love you."
"Y-eah."
"Is your fiance a he or she?"
She shook her head, looking off in the distance. "I... love you," she whispered for the first-and last-time.
No words were spoken.
They started off into the distance, studying the bark of an old tree until the sun was nearly set, hoping for their flame to spar again. They knew better now, though. They had never been good for each other. He went from outgoing to only relying on her, willing to kill himself for her happiness. She took his place, feigning that same happiness until she cracked. He only egged her on; he found her brooding ravishing. She only egged him on; she wanted him to save her from herself.
They never would have worked.
And finally, as the sun set, his sister appeared, brown hair hanging down to her hips, and Teru swore she saw tears in her woeful smile before she led her brother off. And she swore she felt eyes on her as Kyoya approached, wrapping an arm around her shoulders and leading her out of the chill that had rooted in her heart, and she knew the ache would never really go away.
