"Some days she felt like she was swimming in lies, treading water in a sea of deception. One day, surely, she would drown in her own secrets."

Just over an hour later, Venetia and Peggy found themselves standing in front of the men that had been selected as candidates for the Super Solider Program. Both women looked over the men in silence for a few moments. They had no doubt that the men were likely thinking they were waiting for their commanding officers, oblivious to the fact that the women before them were their commanding officers. As Venetia scanned over the crowd before her her gazes ending up landing on the smallest of the men, Steve Rogers. He stood at least a foot shorter than the other men and looked at though the helmet on his head could snap his neck at any second.
"Recruits, attention!" Peggy shouted, making each man straighten up. "Gentlemen, I'm Agent Carter. This is Dr. Sarafian."
Venetia managed to maintain her poker face, hiding her surprise, as Peggy referred to her as a doctor. It was no secret that the Sarafian woman was studying to obtain a doctorate, but she still had a long way to go before she earned it.
"We supervise all operations for this division," Peggy continued.
"What's with the accent, Queen Victoria?" One of the soldiers scoffed, causing both women to narrow their eyes at him. "Thought I was signing up for the U.S. Army?"
"What's your name, soldier?" Venetia moved to stand in front of the soldier that had spoken out of turn. She didn't miss the look of amusement that shined in his eyes when he heard her own accent, a mixture of English and Italian.
"Gilmore Hodge, your Majesty." He mocked her, only adding to her irritation.
"Step forward, Hodge. Put your right foot forward" she ordered him. Hodge only smirked as he followed her instructions.
"Mmm... We gonna wrassle? Cause I got a few movies I know you'll like." Hodge only continued to prod at her as he listened, his smirk never leaving his lips. Venetia didn't say a word as she quickly pulled back her arm and punched the man in the face, successfully sending him to the floor.
"Dr. Sarafian. Agent Carter," Colonel Phillips greeted the women as he made his way into the room.
"Colonel Phillips," Peggy nodded at the man.
"I see you're breaking in the candidates. That's good!" Phillips chuckled before he turned his attention to where Hodge was cradling his bleeding nose. "Get your ass up out of that dirt and stand in that line at attention till somebody comes and tells you what to do!"
"Yes, sir!" Hodge scrambled back up to his feet.
"General Patton has said that wars are fought with weapons but they are won by men. We are going to win this war because we have the best men..." Phillips trailed off for a moment when he spotted Rogers, a clear look of displeasure in his eyes. "And because they're gonna be better. Much better. The Strategic Scientific Reserve is an Allied effort made up of the best minds in the free world. Our goal is to create the best army in history. But every army starts with one man. At the end of this week we will choose that man. He will be the first in the new breed of super-soldiers. And they will personally escort Adolf Hitler to the gates of Hell."
