"Some days she felt like she was swimming in lies, treading water in a sea of deception. One day, surely, she would drown in her own secrets."

As soon as the show ended Venetia found herself crouched over the car, trying to figure out what had gone wrong with it. The curtains had been pulled tight over the stage, granting her some privacy as the expo continued around them. It was with the privacy that she had abandoned her jacked and rolled up the sleeves of her turtleneck, revealing several thick black marks that painted her arms, no two identical.
"You need to take a break," Howard commented as he joined her, not surprised to find her hard a work. "Trust me, you're going to get plenty of time to work after tomorrow. Colonel Phillips will make sure of it."
"It should've worked," Venetia shook her head, ignoring everything he had said. "I checked it five times, I don't understand what happened."
"Nothing is perfect. Not even you, Nettie." Howard stepped closer, resting a hand on the woman's shoulder. She looked up at his touch, a small frown filling her lips as she looked up at him. "Just give yourself a break, go and enjoy the rest of the expo. Maybe you'll even learn a few things."
"Doubtful," the corners of her lips twitched upwards, as did Howard's.
"There's the annoying know-it-all that I tolerate," he chuckled. "Come on, let's go find something to eat."
"You go ahead with Mandy," she shook her head. "I want to check up on Abraham first."
"You'd rather spend time with the old doctor than me?" He feigned a look of hurt.
"Less of a chance of him making a move on me," she joked with him. Though Howard had constantly flirted with her when they'd first started working together, he had stopped somewhat quickly, having grown to view the woman as a younger sister. Either that or her repeated threats to make him incapable of reproducing finally got through to him, Venetia would never know which it was. "I'll meet you at the car?"
"Be careful," Howard pressed a kiss to her hairline before they headed in opposite directions. While Howard headed towards the other expositions of the night, Venetia headed in the direction of the recruitment building at the edge of the expo, her sleeves pulled down to conceal her arms once more.
The soldiers, doctors, and nurses didn't bat an eye at the woman, Dr. Erskine having already alerted them that she would likely be stopping by at some point in the night. Venetia walked with her head held high towards the small office the German doctor had been granted during his visit. She didn't bother knocking on the door before she made her way inside, finding him sitting at the paper covered desk.
"Good evening," she smiled at the man.
"Good evening," he returned her smile with one of his own as he leaned back in his seat. "How was the show?"
