Lucifer turned around to face his brother. "What even ..." The expression of pure confusion and disbelief on Michael's face mirrored how own feelings.
"Is this ... A joke?" The older one asked, unable to accept the things he just read as the truth.
"I mean ... I know that humans have no clue what they actually do and they fuck up a lot – everyday to be honest – but this is ..." Lucifer tried to search for the right words.
"Disgusting."
"Horrible."
The two archangels looked at each other when they spoke at the same time.
"That as well. It's disgusting and horrible." Michael nodded.
"I mean, I have seen a lot of situations and I do not want to compare any of them, that would take too much time and we do not have enough time to unpack all of that, but this is one of the situations I hate. No one knows what they are actually doing but everybody thinks they do. They don't seem to learn ..." He sighed. Lucifer continued to look at his brother, who was looking at the ground, shaking his head. Sometimes he forgot that Michael saw – unlike himself – the entire human history.
He could just wonder what it was like for Michael, back then when he was still trapped in the cage while his brother was free, able to watch every single thing that happened.
Evolution, wars, kingdoms, empires ... what did he all see? What did he experience, all alone without him ...?
Maybe I'll ask him someday ... The blond one thought."I never thought that I would ever say that ...", the black haired one's voice was wat brought Lucifer – whose mind started to wander off – back to reality.
"But ...", he looked helpless and he moved one hand up, letting it run through his dark hair, "maybe the cage wasn't that bad ...?" He shrugged, laughing nervously.
"I mean ... No one else was there except for some weird things like the temple or the maze, but that was everything!" The oldest angel tried to defend his own statement. "It was of course not the best place possible but well ... It was a place where we were save, somehow."
Of course Michael didn't like the cage.
He hated it.
The maze, the weird mirrors that seemed to be literally everywhere, the fact that he would lose Lucifer from time to time ...
He hated all of it and, dear god, he wished to get out the entire time he was there, but now?
The sudden realization that he wouldn't be able to get back into his save and familiar room in heaven ... He just couldn't.
He freed Lucifer.
He would get into serious trouble for it, despite being an archangel.
Also a part of him didn't even want to get back, not without Lucifer.
He had no place to be save now. Earth wasn't save for him, especially not in this weird house. He couldn't forget the strange girl he saw this night. The worry he felt for his brother was back.
He looked so ... done with everything, it made his heart ache.
"Mike, hey..." He stood up slowly, his gaze was focused on his brother's helpless face and he placed his hands on his shoulders carefully.
"Michael, everything will be alright" He couldn't tell what exactly was wrong with the angel, but he felt like this was exactly what he needed. Lucifer's eyes met Michaels, for a second he saw fear in the hazel eyes.
Fear.
Panic.
Softly, Lucifer stroked over the smaller ones' shoulders, smiling at him lightly.
"Calm down, alright? We're gonna find a place where we are just as save, surely even more."
The dark haired ones' shoulders, that were tensed up before, started to sink down and he could feel how his brother's muscles relaxed. The helpless expression as still present thought and he started to look at him in a questioning way.
"Are you sure?" Lucifer smiled again and nodded, placing one of his hands on his cheek.
"I am sure." Michaels eyes seemed to lighten up a little bit when he touched him, but Lucifer couldn't tell if it was his own imagination or not.
"Let's more into the living room, yeah? I'm gonna make tea for you."
"That sounds great ..." The smaller one smiled lightly and looked at the taller one.
Lucifer couldn't help but smile as well when Michael started to smile again. His light eyes were glued to him. He loved that view and it made him feel save and calm. They both stood there in silence, looking at each other in silence for some seconds before Michael opened his mouth again: "So? What about the tea?"
Lucifer woke up from the trance he seemed to be in. "Wha'? Oh yeah of course!" He took a step back before he turned around.
"Follow me!"The living room Michael was sitting in had a rustic touch and he was sitting on an old couch that was surprisingly comfortable.
He was sitting between the backrest and the armrest. His legs were crossed and his dark eyes wandered around the room so he could inspect it a bit.
It wasn't exactly the way he would decorate a room but it wasn't all too bad.
He liked the fireplace inside the room.
He liked fireplaces, especially the ones that looked old.
They made every room a bit more likeable and comfortable in his opinion.Slowly he leaned his head back and closed his eyes lightly. Hopefully Lucifer would come back soon. He still didn't like this house, despite the fireplace. The thought of the girl didn't go away fully.
He didn't know what she was, where she came from or why she was there.
He couldn't let go of the memory with her, not until all the questions were answered.
He sighed and tried to calm himself down and focused on his breathing.
"Michael ..."
He froze.
Did someone really call his name?
Or was he hallucinating?
He could feel his heart, beating slightly faster than usually, in his chest and he held his breath.
Everything was silent for some seconds, some seconds that felt like an eternity to him.
Slowly he breathed out again, there was no other sound.
I'm just hallucinating. I should stop thinking about that weird girl I saw in the wall. Maybe she wasn't even real and it was just something I saw because I lost this amount of energy by breaking down the cage with Lucifer. That's all. I'm getting paranoid. He opened his eyes again only to freeze again. He was not as paranoid as he thought. He was not alone anymore and his company was definitely not Lucifer. Someone stared at him through the fireplace, headfirst. Messy, dirty and matted hair. The eyes were empty and dead, rolled back into the head. The mouth was slightly opened, the pale lips were parted, as if someone was sleeping. The position of the neck was weird and it looked like something was wrong with it, the position of the head made the strange and unhealthy position even clearer.
The soldier thought his heart would stop beating every second.
He couldn't really breathe and when he tried to gasp for air he noticed something else; a strong and sickening sweet smell.
Whatever this creature was, it smelled like death.
He wanted to stand up to defend himself and Lucifer – hopefully his powers would work again – and to throw it back to wherever it was coming from, but he couldn't get up.
His body seemed to be frozen in shock.
Fuck. That was the only thought he was able to create, the rest of his mind was empty.
The thing turned its head around with a painful cracking sound and managed it to stare at Michael directly with its own dead eyes.
Slowly the creature started to climb out of the fireplace, using its hands to pull itself forward.
The pale hands reached out of the fireplace, placing it on the outside and slowly the archangel could see how the body followed.
Now it was even more visible that the neck was not just in an unhealthy position, the position was deadly. Its neck was twisted.
While it made its way out of the fireplace, over to the archangel, that seemed to be paler than before and was still unable to move, it opened its mouth more and let out a strange sound that made the angel shiver in disgust.
The sound it created sounded like an old stairway made out of wood that creaked under the weight of someone that tried to walk down slowly.
Michael's heart started to beat even faster, it felt like it was about to burst through his chest.
The creature opened its mouth again but this time Michael couldn't hear the sound.
The only thing he could hear was his own heartbeat and the blood that rushed through his head.
Lucifer. I can't move. I can't protect him. I can't even warn him. No. Father no, please. No.
The creature was now entirely out of the fireplace and crawled over to the archangel, his prey as it seemed, and continued to stare at him with the dead and milky eyes.
A smile seemed to appear on the thin and pale lips while it moved closer.
Soon it would be on the sofa, right in front of him.
Michael knew that. As well as he knew that he was not able to protect himself from it ...
