Chapter 1

The world is ending. Just a heads up.

How do I know? Because the world told me. Or, I should say, us. The world told us. Literally. A loud, booming voice overtook our minds for a full four minutes, taking a minute for each word.

By the way, I'm Bookie. Bookie Paige. I'm 100% sure that's not my real birth name. None of us know our real names, so we made them up. I'm Bookie, and there are Ivy, Rain, Owl, Shadow, and Zip. We have these names for reasons. Reasons that might scare readers with soft hearts.

I am, as far as we know, the smartest person in the world. Literally. I can calculate even the hardest of problems within a matter of seconds. Anything that requires using your brain, not matter how hard, is simple for me. That's how I logically decided I should be leader. And, have never been wrong, the others quickly agreed. Logic, of course.

Ivy can influence plants to do anything. She can make them grow before your eyes, envelope something to where you can't see that object anymore. This is helpful when trapping things, especially people who are running or attacking us.

Rain controls the weather. Rain, sleet, snow, hail, wind, anything. It could be a perfectly clear sky, and then huge, thundering clouds could roll in. Then they could be gone as soon as they appeared.

Owl can talk to animals, all of them. But he likes owls the most, so we call him Owl.

Shadow could be standing by, well, anything, and suddenly become shadow. Just a shape of a human, moving around. Even in broad sunlight.

Zip runs a million miles and hour, literally. Zip is there, then she's not. Million miles an hour. She could run around the world three times in twenty four hours. Don't trust her around desserts, though, because she'll steal them before you can pick up your fork.

So there you have it. Us. The freak kids. Oh yeah, we're kids, just so you know. I'm thirteen. Ivy and Rain are twelve. Owl's nine, Shadow's eight, and Zip is seven. We're just your typical, everyday, mutant freak kids. Go us!
