About an hour later, we were on the beach. Huge waves crashed onto the shore, their mist spraying our toes. Zip, Owl, and Shadow were having fun in the waves, getting wet, running, screaming. Ivy and Rain were also acting like five year olds. But I sat in the damp, cold sand with my knees tucked to my chest, thinking.
The first thing that was worrying me was the fact that my visions didn't seem to be always perfect. There had been no mention of Ivy punching the bus with her tree. So, maybe, the future changes depending on what people decide. That's the conclusion I came to. And when I saw myself falling into the stream and Owl actually ended up doing it.
Another thing worrying me was the fact that we were developing new skills. I mean, they've been pretty unpredictable so far. Who knows, maybe Zip will be able to make people do what she wants. That would be, just, freaky.
Also, something else frightening, we were all getting stronger with our new powers. We all seemed to be able to do things we haven't done before.
Ivy ran up to me, dripping wet. Her grin was almost so wide it was ridiculous. She tripped and landed on her face, making me buckle over with laughter. When I regained myself, I gave her an apologetic smile and she sat down next to me, covered with sand and water.
"What's up?" I asked, knowing it wasn't likely she would stop her fun for no reason.
She shrugged. "I don't know."
I frowned. "Spit it out."
She took a breath. When I was sure she wasn't going to say anything, she said, "It's just . . . We all seem to be getting new powers." I raised my eyebrow at her . . . Disapproving face. "Which is great and everything," she added quickly. I nodded. "But, what if the Black Jackets have something to do with them? What if they're, er, experimenting on us?"
I tilted my head, a frown on my face. "What makes you say that?"
"Well, they seem to have to do with everything that makes us abnormal."
"Yeah, that's true. I don't know." I shrugged. "Maybe they do."
Ivy was about to say something, but closed her mouth. Then she squinted at the ocean. "Where's Zip?"
