I woke up in the same hospital room again. Same flickering light, same plants, all too familiar. But this time, there was a different nurse. Instead if the slightly chubby brown haired nurse named Alissa, it was a stick thin red haired nurse named Sue.
Sue was nice, but not as nice as Alissa. It was like Sue was forcing out the niceness. Like when your mom or dad forces you to be nice to someone who you don't know or don't like. But Alissa was the kind of nice that felt like you've been good friends for years.
Once my eyes adjusted, I saw Alex sitting in the chair next to my bed. "Maya" he said with a relived voice. "Hi Alex.." I said weakly. It hurt to talk. It felt like an elephant was constantly sitting on my chest. I couldn't take a deep breath. "How are you feeling?" Alex asked. "I'm feeling okay" I replied.
The doctor walked in with his clip board in one hand and a stethoscope around his neck. "Hello once again Maya." He said. "Hello" I said back. "Well, you were beat up pretty well.. 2 fractured ribs, broken foot, and fractured skull." He said trying to make it sound like it wasn't a big deal. "That much?!" I said. I knew everything hurt, but I didn't know it was THAT much.. "Yep" he said.
Sue peeked her head around the door and called the doctor. Sue and the doctor were obviously talking about something serious, according to their low volume and the fact that they were constantly glancing at Alex and I. I got worried because I thought my mom was here, but she wasn't. The doctor walked back in and said
"The cost will be 10,000.."
My heart dropped. I didn't know it cost that much! I don't want to be a trouble to Alex's family. Once the doctor left the room, I was talking to Alex. "Alex please you really don't have to pay for it. I'll find a way to pay for it. I don't want to be a trouble in your family." "Maya, I can't let you do that. It's my fault for leaving you alone so my family will pay for it okay? I'll do anything for you. Don't worry. " He said
About 4 days later, we finally went home. Well.. Alex went home, I went to his house. But I guess it's my house now. I can get used to it, but I just need some time. It hurt to get up and walk, like a stinging or burning pain. As if hundreds of bees were stinging my foot when I applied pressure on it. In the car, Alex and I were talking. "Maya I'm sorry. This is all my fault. I shouldn't have left you alone..." Alex said. "Alex, it's not your fault okay? This is all Lexi's fault. She's not getting suspended because her mom is the principal. You know, Mrs. Flynn? Yep, Lexi's mom. But Alex it's not your fault so don't blame it on yourself."'
Once we finally got home, I plopped down on the couch. I was exhausted. "Hi Maya, how are you feeling? Alex's mom asked. "I'm pretty good, I'm just kinda tired" I said. "Oh ok. Would you like anything to eat?" She asked. Of course I wanted food, but I just don't want to go get it. "Sure" I said anyway. "Ok I'll make it for you." She said as she walked towards the kitchen.
The food was delicious. Much better than that disgusting excuse of food that the nurse shoved in my mouth 3 times a day. I was really really tired after eating, so I headed off to bed. I opened the door, and Alex was in there. He was just sitting on his bed. "Hey Alex" I said. "Hi Maya" he said back. "I'm pretty tired from today, do you mind if I go to bed?" I asked. "Nope, go right ahead" he said as he got up. I was too tired to even change out of my clothes, so I just climbed right into bed and fell asleep.
