"I have a car here. I set out from here. Took a southern route to get to where you found me. How were you supposed to get home?" I had no clue how or where his start point was or how he planned on leaving the wilderness. There had to be a trailhead somewhere for him.
"Where is the map? I think we are close to my trailhead. It looked like I started south of here. I was supposed to make a call tomorrow and a friend was going to come and get me. Then I'd go to the airport the next day and fly home."
"I have a small cabin reserved to recoup the trip in for two days then off to the airport and off to Oregon."
"Do you mind keeping me with you?"
"Boy! If I could keep you beside me always I would." We smiled as we hiked down the trail to the trailhead. We worked out that the trailhead he was supposed to be at was just a few miles south of mine. We were leaving on the same day.
"Do you want to stay in the cabin with me or do you want to get your own?"
"Do you want me to stay with you? You know I will not be sleeping on the couch if I do." He looked over at me and smiled a devious smile. "I am not sure what you had in mind regarding recouping, but If we're lucky there won't be much resting and a lot of talking and so much in between." He was speaking a language I understood.
"That settles that. Water?" Goodness, he laughed so hard he had to sit down. We made it to the car pretty fast. After another check of our gear, we headed to the cabins. The drive was short and pleasant.
"I need to call my friend and let him know I won't be needing anything. Do you mind if I do that now?"
"I don't if you don't. I'll be quiet."
He looked at me like I had the plague, then smiled a magnificent smile. "You don't have to be. I'm gonna call him now." He made his call and apologize for not needing a ride after all then apologized even more for not being seen. It was the cutest thing ever. I tried very hard not to giggle. "Don't you need to call someone?"
"I will call her tonight."
"Are you sure you'll have time?" There was that smile again.
"I'll call her now. I'm driving do you care if I put her on speaker?"
"Do you care if I talk to her too?" His eyes were really shining.
"I don't see why not. What time is it in Illinois?" I looked at the clock and nodded. "Will you message her for me first and see if she is busy and can take a call please?" He smiled and took my phone. He unlocked it and frowned a genuine frown at me.
"How do you even make this thing work?" I looked at him perplexed and confused. It was a phone, how could he not know how to work one? Then I remembered, he has an iPhone I did not. I laughed and shook my head.
"iPhone users, give them a real phone and they are totally lost." He huffed at me and rolled his eyes.
"I could throw it out the window."
"I could kill you."
"No need to threaten my life."
"Tit-for-tat."
"Point taken. Don't mess with the lady's phone. Seriously how do I message on this? Is this red icon on the bottom it? Oh yes! Message plus. Oh look she's right on top and she messaged you first."
"She did?" I was surprised, but then I looked at the clock again. I was late. I sighed heavy and gripped the wheel a little tighter. I hated being late where she was concerned. She had no care for it either, but she also knew who I had run into. I crossed my fingers.
