THE CAPITAL WAS STILL quiet in the morning

THE CAPITAL WAS STILL quiet in the morning. Sure, the people were awake. The Ilians usually woke early, but they were all eerily quiet that morning. Like they had been the night before.

Vada's undone hair hung over her shoulders as she stepped out of the kingsized bed. The purple silk that made her bedsheets were messy and all over her bed, but she didn't care.

Her lilac robe coated her body as she walked over to the balcony once more. She liked watching the city, especially when she was feeling a little anxious. This was one of those times. She noticed the quiet immediately, like she did hours ago when she stood in the same place. She didn't blame the Ilians, they were right to be afraid. They'd be stupid if they weren't.

She stood there — leaning her elbows on the marble and her eyes closed up to the rising sun, for about ten minutes. She knew she had to go inside and face the day to come.

As if she knew, Vada's personal handmaid – Lene, a girl who was born in the deserts of Ilia, entered her chambers.

Lene bowed once Vada had turned around, "good morning, your Highness."

Vada laughed softly, "I told you to stop doing that and just call me Vada." She moved towards the bathroom, which was connected to her chambers. It was all coated in marble, the floor, the ceiling, the walls, the bathtub and even the toilet. The only reason Vada could bare it was because it was a mixture of white, black and lilac marble.

"I know, your High– Vada," she quickly corrected herself, "it's just a habit. I'm merely a servant and you're the Princess."

Vada smiled as she took off her robe. Lene had already let the bathwater run in advance and took Vada's robe from the Princesses' hands. This wasn't at all embarrassing for them. Vada and Lene had known each other long and after all, this was Lene's job. Vada grew up with it.

"I'm also still human," Vada spoke as she slowly sat down in the hot bathtub. Lene dropped some lavender oils in the water to make it smell good and to drown out all the bad spirits, a belief that was common on Ilia. Which is also why the entire planet has so much lavender, a plant species not originated from there but from another, unknown planet somewhere in the galaxy.

Lene nodded as she grabbed a hairbrush and started to brush Vada's hair. "I know...Vada."

Vada was done shortly after. She was clean and ready to put on some fresh clothes. She was going with the Princess attire, for now. Her father thought that would be best. She was still a Princess, after all. Lene helped her get into a loosely fitting lilac dress – a color very common in Vada's closet. The skirt of the dress slowly turned into black near the bottom, while the corset was a fully lilac lace. She wore black heels, which she did not enjoy, and Lene even convinced her to put some slight makeup on.

"Please, let me help you with your hair," Lene begged the Princess, but the latter was very persistent when it came to her hair.

So her answer was clear. "I can do it myself, don't worry. Why don't you go back to your own chambers and change. Your dress is still wet from the the tub."

Lene bowed again, not even realizing what she was doing. "Of course, your–...Vada." Vada smiled at her back while the girl strode off.

Though Lene's creations were always much better, Vada liked doing her own hair. It gave her a little sense of self-control. Like there was something left she could do by herself. She managed to braid a few strands of her silver hair and once done, she was satisfied with the result.
