The rest of my day in the Slammer was pretty uneventful. I saw a rat, screamed at the top of my lungs, threw the chair at it, and it scurried off; me ending up scareing half the Gladers because they thought something bad was happening to me.

How am I supposed to survive here when I get scared by a RAT?!

This is gonna be a long life here.

I took a deep breath and sighed thinking of what I could do. I looked over at the broken chair, maybe I could do something like that again?

I took a deep breath and looked directly at it, focusing on it. I thought of what I wanted it to do, move across to the opposite side of the room.

I heard someone chant in my head, like a voice telling me what I need to do.

And it felt familiar.

Unconsciously I raised my hand with my fingers slowly starting to clench. A fat drop of blood dribbled down onto my lip, staining it red.

With one quick swipe of my arm, the chair slid all the way crashing into the other wall

With one quick swipe of my arm, the chair slid all the way crashing into the other wall.

I did, it was me who controlled it

I was shocked! Surely this wasn't normal! But I couldn't tell anyone, at least not yet. I needed to know who I can trust first, I don't want them to get deadly intentions towards me.

I sat around for the rest of the day thinking, trying to remember something, anything, but nothing came to mind. Trying to unlock the cage in my brain to find the answer to how any of this was possible. I barely noticed someone unlocking the door until it swung open to reveal Newt and Alby standing there.

"Alright Shank, your free to go." Alby said helping me up.

I stepped outside, it was still daytime, maybe 4:30pm now based on the Sun's position.

"We're gonna take you on the official tour tomorrow, but introduce you to the Keepers tonight at dinner and show you the Homestead for now." Newt said, as I turned back to face them.

"Right now I wanna talk to you." Alby said putting his hand on my shoulder. I looked at Newt and he nodded for me to follow them.

We went over to the Homestead. Alby opened the door and we walked inside. There was a living room with a old couch, chairs, and a staircase that led up to the other levels of the old house.

"Sit" Alby said pointing to a chair in the living room. I walked over and sat. The chair was wooden and the surface color was faded in the sunlight.

Alby and Newt sat in two other wooden chairs around me.

"So, I heard your name is Eliza. Nice to meet ya, welcome to the Glade. Like Newt said, we're sorry you had to spend your first day here cooped up in the Slammer. First time any girl stepped foot here. We grow our food here, and live here. This is the Homestead. Here, us Keepers sleep in our own rooms, as well as rooms for the medjacks patients. We don't have enough room for everyone to sleep inside comfortably, so most either have a hammock or a sleeping bag outside." Alby explained.

"Which is another thing we wanna talk to you about." Newt added. "Since your the only girl here we want to make sure your safe. You're only one girl out of 60 boys. Boys of ages teens to young adults live here, we don't want any of them to get the wrong idea that they can do anything they want to you if you may be vulnerable, if you know what i mean."

I knew what he meant. I didn't want to be too, too close to the others let alone anyone of them touching me inappropriately without my consent or against my will.

"We have thought of a solution for now, and it may be a bit uncomfortable at the moment, but it's the best thing we could put together." Alby said, not wanting to make much eye contact.

I felt a bit uneasy, and scared too at they way they were explaining this. I don't know whether to be worried or not, but still I was scared. Morely at the fact others would want to touch me, no doubt some would try.

"So what's the plan?" I asked, my voice shaking a bit.

Newt and Alby looked at each other, they looked worried but took deep breaths and looked back at me.

"You'll have to share not only a room with one of the Keepers, but a bed too." Alby said.

Newt looked me straight in the eye and finished the explanation,

"You'll be staying in my room."
