It wasn't exactly ... conventional.
Hell, it wasn't even legal.
But when were you and Bucky ever doing anything legal?
It had been ... taxing, trying to deal with those feelings, and such a relief when you found he returned them. And now the only problem was telling Steve Rogers, your brother.
How fun.
"He's gonna be fine," Bucky said. "Maybe,"
You looked over at your boyfriend. "You don't fill me with much confidence, Barnes,"
He smiled - the lazy one that always made you smile despite whatever you'd been talking about. It was a pretty nice smile.
You laid down on the bed next to him. "I'm just worried he'll freak out, ya'know? He ain't the most ... patient or calm person either of us know,"
"I think this whole war thing is makin' him worse," Bucky said as he shifted so he was resting his head on his hand. "He's your brother, you know him best,"
"And I know he's kinda fuckin' loony sometimes. Swear those meds he has are half the cause why he's so fuckin' dumb,"
Bucky smiled. "He's a goddamn punk."
"That he is."
A few weeks passed. Still no mention of the relationship to Steve. It was weird, to keep something from your brother. You knew it was weird for Bucky; he and Steve were the best of friends.
It sometimes felt that it should've been them two in the relationship, not you and Bucky. But Bucky often persuaded you that you two were good together. Despite all the risks, you two continued. Hidden away in shadows, behind closed doors. It wasn't the right way to live a relationship, but it was as good as either of you could get.
Maybe in the future, this kind of relationship would be alright.
"We gotta tell 'im," Bucky said. Whenever he got agitated, his accent seemed to come out more. It was kind of endearing. "He ain't gonna be mad. Maybe mad we kept it from 'im this long. He's gonna be fine with it."
"So tell him," you said, shrugging a shoulder.
"Hell, no. I ain't his brother. You tell 'im."
You raised an eyebrow. "You're his best friend."
"Brother tops friend,"
You smirked. "In more ways that that,"
The blush on Bucky's face was worth the comment.
"I'll tell 'im. Pray I ain't gonna get punched,"
"He punches fatheads on the streets. You ain' a fathead all that much."
You shoved at Bucky's shoulder, trying to hide the amused look on your face.
Steve was in his room, recovering from some sickness he caught. He worried you a lot; he always got sick and seemed like he was always close to dying. But he kept going. That stubbornness in him was given from your mom, and you'd gotten it too.
"Hey, Stevie," you said softly. His ears had been bad lately. Quiet voices only. "I gotta tell ya somethin',"
"Is it about you and Bucky?" he asked. Your heart leapt out of your chest. He smiled weakly, catching the look on your face despite his crappy eyesight. "You two ain't that subtle. I catch you two starin' at each other like ya hung the moon and stars. Be careful out there, brother, people aren't too kindly to you and me,"
You nodded, smiling slightly. The tears pricked at your eyes before you leaned down and hugged your brother gently. He felt like skin and bones, too weak to be held in a proper hug in case he broke.
"I ever tell ya you're the best brother?"
"Only when I'm dying,"
"Shut up, jerk,"
"Fathead."
