Chapter2

Zara peeled her eyes open, staring at the darkened stone door in front of her. She'd had a lovely dream, soaring through white clouds, free from any control. She let out a small sigh and pushed aside the door and stepped outward. Her bare feet touched the marble floor, and she stared around her in confusion.

When the update finished, it was simultaneous, with every angel exiting at the same time. Yet, the room around her was darkened. The other caskets hummed silently around her, but no angels stirred. She was alone and awake, and she didn't know why.

"Hello."

Zara turned swiftly and stared at the woman standing behind her. The woman was tall and lean, with long muscled legs and strong arms. Her hair was black and swept to the side in a braid, with tendrils draped across her face. She wore black, a pair of tight-fitting pants and a leather black vest. Her stance was relaxed, one knee slightly bent, and her hands interwoven in front of her. She stared at Zara with the most peculiar eyes, glistening gold.

"Hello," Zara said slowly. She studied the woman, attempting to understand what was wrong with her. She didn't know why, but the woman looked different, unnatural to Zara. It was with a start she realised she did not have wings.

Azzarra had never seen another creature before.

"What's happening?" Zara asked slowly, not returning her greeting.

The woman tilted her head to the side and a strand of hair shifted. "I'm here to just get a look at you."

"Why?" Zara asked, adjusting her stance so she faced the unknown woman fully.

The woman just offered a small sad smile. "I'm just ensuring that everything is going to plan. That you aren't straying from the path of fate."

Zara went cold. This woman must have known, she must be aware of all the little things that Zara felt and thought. She'd been discovered. She should have realised the moment she saw those Protectors, maybe she could have made some futile attempt to escape.

The woman offered Zara a slightly bigger smile. "Calm down, young one. It is not time." Then the woman was standing directly in front of her, appearing to seemingly disappear and reappear.

Zara had no time to react before two fingers were gently placed upon her temple. The woman leaned in, her lips an inch away from Zara's ear. She only said one word.

"Remember."

And then Zara actually woke up. She jolted up right, feeling the tubing rescind from her skull. Her eyes darted wildly, her heart racing and not understanding what had just happened.

Zara did dream, something she was supposed to be incapable of, but never like that. She reached up and touched her temple, the skin was unmarked and undamaged. It was just a dream it seemed, yet Zara couldn't shake of the chill that settled at the base of her spine.
