Zara managed to find two tea bags from a small box which loudly advertised strong, low caffeine black tea in bright and bold letters. She tried to remember how one was suppose dto make tea. You need hot water, that was for sure. She found the jug, filled it up and waited. This wasn't actually that hard.
It was barely any time at all before she had the boiling water in the mugs, dipping the tea bags in. She hastily remembered to add the sugar and milk, and then she went back to their own personal viewing area.
It felt good to work with her hands. It was a welcome distraction from her increasing anxiety, and Violet must have understood that when she sent her off. At that moment, Zara didn't think Violet would send her away for anything else.
When she got back, she noticed the empty room. No alarm bells sounded in her head. They had probably just both gone over to the bathroom or to . . . do something else. She placed the mugs on the small coffee table and peered around.
"Violet, where are you? Cassie? Hello, where are you guys?"
Calling out their names did nothing, so Zara peered around the house. Her heart rate increased as she checked through the ground floor and didn't find either Violet or Cassie. She knew they wouldn't play any stupid hiding games, right? By the time she finished searching all the bathrooms it felt like she was dragging her stomach along behind her it was so filled with dread.
Panic sweat beaded at her forehead as her efforts became frantic. It took her much too long to realise that those idiots were gone. She didn't want to believe Violet would betray her like this. Violet was supposed to keep Cassie safe. Cassie was supposed to not have a death wish. She thought Violet was her friend.
Zara sprinted out the door, not even stopping to put shoes on. Outside there was nothing but the wind and the chilly air. Her eyes scanned the yard frantically, desperately hopping that they had decided to take a leisurely stroll.
But she knew where they were going. She just didn't know why.
So, she sprinted off into the direction she had seen the wolves run into. Zara didn't know the way exactly, not like Violet would have, but if she just kept running surely, she would get there.
She felt the branches whip against her face. She felt the sharp slices of trees and rocks dig into her feet. Skin broke open and began to bleed. Her lungs heaved in desperation for air. The scab nestled in the beginning of her hairline from leaping from a car split open.
She ran for so long that her body couldn't take it and she fell to her knees. Her lungs shuddered and burned fiercely. She was drenched in sweat which cooled her down in the cold air. Zara didn't know where she was. She didn't know where Cassie was. She didn't know where the battle was. She didn't know what was happening.
She took a few seconds to control her breathing, and when her heart stopped thumping so loudly in her ears, she heard it. There were crashes and snarls, clangs, and howls.
Slowly, her body practically begging her not to, Zara stood up and began a light jog. Her feet hurt so terribly, but she ignored all of it to get to Cassie. The sound was her guidance as she made her way through the dimly lit forest, ignoring everything but her desperation.
All of a sudden, she broke free from the line of trees. Light blared at her, blinding her for a second before she saw what was happening. There were blurs of shadows and all of a sudden, the noise was intense and blaring. She looked around frantically, barely able to see what was happening.
There was so much too look at it, Zara found herself unable to even comprehend what was happening. It was a war. She glanced at all the twisted and monstrous beings. She saw all the wolves attacking them. There was something very obvious-
