"You waiting for Jace?" Millie asked with a smile when she walked around the corner and found Cassie sitting at the bench top. She was still in her robe, little slippers on her feet and her hair tied in a messy bun on top of her hair.
Cassie offered her a smile and nodded. "I was going to wait down by his little man-shack, but Diane insisted I come up for some tea."
The old woman offered a tight smile as she finished filling the jug and set it to boil. "I couldn't have her waiting out in the cold, could I?"
"Sounds great mum." Millie nodded and gave Cassie an almost sympathetic smile. "It must be so difficult to be human; you get cold so easily."
Cassie let out a small laugh. "Oh well, means I can bundle up and enjoy some hot tea."
Mille nodded absentmindedly. "It's quite early," Millie observed, peering at her wristwatch. "You and Jace going for breakfast."
"Yep, we're thinking of trying that new café that opened on the corner of Gilmore. I think it's called Buck something or another. I have seen there menu online and the food looks amazing."
"You'll have to tell me how it goes," Millie said with another grin. She let out a yawn, stretching her arms. "Well, I need to wake up the girls and get ready for the day. Mum, could you make me some while you're at it?"
"No problem," Diane replied back, not looking up at her daughter as she poured the tea.
Cassie watched as Millie left, and she was once again alone with Diane. The old woman was intense Cassie had noted. She was quiet, but her eyes were always following and suspicious. Cassie had a suspicion she was like one of those grandmothers who seemed sweet but was really strict and proper.
"So, what tea is on the menu for today?" Cassie asked, fiddling with her sleeve as she tried to fill up the silence.
"It's a special brew," Diane muttered.
"Special? Doesn't have mushrooms in it, does it?" Cassie meant it jokingly but immediately regretted it when she saw Diane's face. "It was a joke, sorry."
"Hey there."
Cassie perked up when she heard his voice, turning to find Jace grinning at her as he entered the room.
"Hi baby," Cassie said, not containing her grin. She bounced of the seat and leapt into a hug, wrapping her arms around him. "You ready for some breakfast."
"I am starving," Jace groaned out, still holding her in the air which his arms wrapped around her waist. "I'm thinking pancakes, with like a giant stack of bacon."
"Sounds delicious and like a heap of cholesterol," Cassie teased back.
"You won't leave without having some tea, will you?"
Jace slowly lowered Cassie onto the ground and she turned back to Diane, offering a sheepish smile. "Of course, I wouldn't, I can't miss this special brew."
"Special brew?" Jace questioned. "Why have I never been blessed with such an honour."
Diane offered a tight smile, "I can make you a cup too."
"Sure," Jace said with a shrug. He frowned slightly then, his nose twitching. "Is- is that smell your tea? It smells . . . odd."
Cassie frowned, not smelling anything but the faint lingering of toast that someone had made earlier.
"I buy from a special store downtown, its very expensive so I save it for special guests," Diane said as she poured another cup and set it on the countertop. "Now drink up lovebirds."
