"Your grandma is pretty intense," Cassie told Jace jokingly as they walked down the lit path.

Jace gave an awkward laugh. "Yeah, she isn't normally like that, I promise. I think it's the whole that they've been waiting for you, for me to meet you, for a long time."

His grandmother had been all over Cassie the entire time. The older woman was by Cassie's side always, asking questions and staring at her intensely. It was uncomfortable to say the least. It had been a relief what Jace finally asked her if she wanted a walk outside.

"When do werewolves normally meet their mates?" Cassie asked.

Jace shrugged. "You can know for certain from eighteen onwards, but you typically have a feeling before that."

"And you twenty-five so that's a few years," Cassie mused. "Can you ever not find your mate?"

Jace nodded, "Oh definitely. It happens a lot. You get some people who fly all over the world and visit every single pack, but they can never find them. It's really sad. Especially for Alpha's."

"Why especially for alphas?"

"You just, you kinda need some there with you and to help. It isn't meant to a one-person thing. It's meant for two people to overlook and help out. I've been waiting for you for a long time."

Cassie felt her heart flutter at that. She stared up at the skies as she thought about that. "It's pretty crazy being a soul mate. You and I are meant to spend our lives together, and you know that for certain?"

Jace stopped them and brought her attention back to him. "You know, if you're not ready for something that serious we can take it slowly, I mean I'm okay with that." His eyes were wide and lips soft.

"Hey," Cassie said softly, placing a hand on his cheek. "I want to be with you. I don't know how this is going to work out exactly, but you make me really happy and I want to be here right now."

Jace smiled at her. "Thank you for coming tonight."

"I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know everyone, and there was a lot. Not going to lie, I've forgotten like all of their names."

Jace laughed and they continued walking. It was a beautiful night, with the stars shining and a soft breeze. As they walked Cassie couldn't help herself.

"Hey, your family seems really nice," she began. "but can I ask what happened to your dad?"

Jace stumbled a bit at that, his knee buckled slightly before he sprung up. He looked at Cassie with an odd smile, his eyes darkening and his face an open book. It was heartbreak.

Cassie sighed softly. "I haven't told you this, but I've lost a lot of people, Jace. I had two siblings, both of them died before they were teenagers. My mother, well she died in an accident a few years ago. It sucks, it sucks so much. You miss them so much you don't even think its possible, but here you are missing them that much. I also get it that it can be the worst thing in the world when people ask you about them." She swallowed back the lump in her throat and the tears burning her eyes.

Jace took an uneven breath. "He died last year. It's been hard."

"I'm sorry," Cassie told him softly. "How about we don't talk about that, or any family tonight." Then she caught sight of a lake, and a little house perched next to it. "Hey, where have we ended up?"

"Oh, this is where I like to kind of live," Jace said as he rubbed the back of his neck.

"You don't live over there?" Cassie asked as she gestured behind her, where the large house loomed in the background.
