“Finally! Cerulean City! I thought I’d never make it here.” I grinned.

“You nearly didn’t.” Aaron Harding pointed out.

“Thanks for that, Aaron…” I grimaced.

We walked up to the Cerulean City Gym, where Aaron moved over to a large plaque that was located on the left wall. He studied it for a few minutes, then turned to me.

“It seems your friends were here not long ago.”

I ran over to the plaque, and as Aaron had said, my two friends names were printed there:

                                   HOLDERS OF THE MAGMA BADGE

                                     CERULEAN CITY GYM WINNERS

                                                     TOBY GRAZIER

                                                     STEVEN FLYNN

I smiled, and silently congratulated them on their win. I was happy to see that, despite my apparent death, the two had not given up on their dreams. I vowed that once this was over, I would meet up with them again and continue the path we set out on.

“Are you ready to face the Gym Leader?” Aaron asked, snapping me out of my thoughts.

I nodded. Since leaving the makeshift campsite from last night, Aaron had been training me and my Pokémon to great heights. The bond between me and my Pokémon had strengthened, and I was as strong as ever.

Feeling confident, I walked into the Gym. The Gym Leader, Gavin Boyle, was rumoured to be one of the best fire-type Gym Leaders in the world, and was not to be underestimated.

The inside of the Gym was fairly simple. Rocks had been placed all across the battlefield, but otherwise the field was plain.

“Ah, a new challenger? Welcome!” A voice called out. It belonged to the Gym Leader himself; Gavin. “I don’t think there’s any need for introductions. We all know why you’re here.”

“I couldn’t agree more.” I grinned. “The name is Sam Kenealy, by the way.”

“Good to meet you, Sam. I trust you know the rules of this Gym? Single battles, four Pokémon each.”

“Four Pokémon?! I don’t have enough…” I muttered.

“Then let me help you out, Sam.” Aaron stepped in. He handed me a Poké Ball, and walked over to the spectator stands.

A referee stepped into the middle of the battlefield, holding a blue and red flag in each hand. “This is a battle between the challenger Sam Kenealy, and the Gym Leader Gavin Boyle. Only when one side’s Pokémon are unable to battle will a winner be decided.  When you are ready, you may begin!”

“Go! Typhlosion!” Gavin yelled, and launched a Poke Ball onto the battlefield. Within seconds, his Typhlosion appeared.

“Let’s do this, Combusken!”

“Oh? A fire type versus a fire type? A bold move! Let’s see how this goes!” Gavin enthusiastically grinned. “Typhlosion, use Smokescreen!”

Typhlosion stepped forward and breathed out the obscuring purple gas. Like when I battled Steven, the gas covered the entire battlefield, shielding Typhlosion from sight…or so it hoped.

“Combusken, use Sky Uppercut!” I commanded. Combusken nodded, and darted into the Smokescreen.

“What?! But you can’t see Typhlosion! How could you hit something you can’t see?!” Gavin exclaimed.
